"So, do you like my place?" Lillian asked.
"Yeah, it's really neat..." Taylor replied, not paying much attention.
"Would you like to meet someone?"
"Um, sure, who?"
"Follow me."
Lillian took Taylor's hand and brought her to her room. She let go of Taylor's hand and walked to her closet, swinging the doors open. She reached inside and heaved out a glass cage. She set it onto the floor and her and Taylor sat down.
"C'mom, little guy!" Lillian said, lightly tapping the glass. A small red crustacean crawled out from inside a rock hut.
"Aw, it's adorable!" Taylor cooed. "What's it's name?"
"His name's Baxter. I found him at the beach about a month ago."
"Why were you at the beach during winter?"
"I got bored one weekend and decided to take a walk. I ended up at the beachs' docks and found him, so I decided to bring him home!"
"Do your parents know?"
"No. My mom doesn't like crabs. Would you like to hold him?"
"Sure."
Lillian held Baxter up to Taylor's hands, letting him crawl onto her.
"Heh, it sorta tickles!"
"You'll get used to it."
"I bet Fay would love him-"
She went silent. Clouds began to form in her eyes as tears filled her eyes. She held up Baxter to Lillian so she could take him. Once he was back in his cage, Lillian held Taylor close.
"Tay, you need to talk to Faris. You said he was trying to talk to you, right?"
"Y-Yeah..."
"Well, perhaps he was trying to explain what was going on."
"I...I can't talk to him now...Not when I'm like this..."
"Okay, but promise me you'll talk to him on Monday."
"I promise..."
"I don't know what to do, Peyton!" Faris exclaimed. "She won't respond to my texts, she won't answer my calls-"
"Faris, she's in pain right now. She watched some random girl kiss you. She's not in the right mind to want to speak with you."
"Yeah...You're right."
"Now, I need to go. I gotta run some errands with my mom. Try talking to Taylor on Monday, alright?"
"'Kay."
"Bye."
They hung up. Faris ran his fingers through his hair, letting out a long, exasperated sigh. He scrolled through his contact list and decided to call Lillian for advice.
Ring! Ring!
"Wonder who that is..?" Lillian said. She walked to her nightstand to pick up her phone, and saw who was calling. She bit her lip and picked up.
"Hey Lillian, I-"
"Sorry, right now isn't a good time," she whispered. "Call me tomorrow or something."
"But-"
She hung up.
"Who was it?" Taylor asked.
"Hm? Oh, n-no one important."
"Girls! Come over for dinner!" Lillian's mom called.
"Coming, mom!" Lillian called back. The two stood and left the room.
The Next Day...
"So, where should we go?" Lillian asked. "Mulligan's sound g-"
"No."
"Um, alright..."
"Could we just get some coffee? And perhaps a walk in the park?"
"Alright, sounds good to me."
The two walked down the streets to a Starbucks. They stood in line and ordered their drinks. Lillian got a Chai tea, and Taylor got a strong black coffee. They left the shop and walked to a park. They sat at a bench and talked.
"Why would he do that?" Taylor thought aloud.
"Even a refreshing walk and very strong coffee won't get your mind off of it?"
"Lillian, watching your boyfriend kiss another girl doesn't leave your mind very easily."
"Yeah, that's true..."
"What if he meant the kiss? What if he was acting like that towards me just to trick me into thinking it wasn't him? What if-"
"Tay, if you keep thinking of 'what ifs', you're gonna get yourself nowhere."
"I know, but what else am I supposed to think?"
"That Faris didn't mean to kiss the girl, or that the girl was behind it all?"
"Those ones keep leaving my mind for some reason..."
Monday...
Faris scribbled a half-page worth of words and folded the paper a few times before slipping it into the locker. "Are you sure it'll work?" He asked.
"No." Peyton replied.
"Real supportive, Pey."
"Just because I thought of this idea doesn't mean it'll work. But I'm assuming that writing a letter is a better way of communicating than talking so you don't worry about what you say."
"Alright. Let's go."
Tina opened her locker and immediately noticed a piece of folded binder paper. Curious, she unfolded the paper and began to read what was written.
Tay,
I'm so, SO sorry about what happened last week. I didn't mean to stand there and do nothing.
Her name was Emily. She told me she liked me, and I declined, telling her I had a girlfriend. She then kissed me and ran off, and I'm assuming that's when you saw. I looked for her after school and smacked her once I found her.
You're the only thing that matters to me, Taylor. I love you more than anything, and absolutely nothing in this world can take that love away.
I love you so, so, so much.
-Faris
Taylor's eyes welled up with tears. She smiled. She smacked herself in the face right after, and felt her heart hurt with guilt.
Taylor searched for Faris during lunch, and once she found him at his locker, she ran to him and wrapped her arms tightly around him.
"Taylor...?"
"I'm so sorry! I'm such an idiot!"
"Woah, Taylor, slow down. What do you have to be sorry for?"
"I didn't let you talk! I didn't listen to you when you said you could explain! I-I'm just so-so sorry, F-Fay! I l-love you s-so-so much!"
Hearing those words made Faris' heart flutter. He wiped Taylor's running mascara and brought her closer into the embrace. She looked up at him and kissed him, missing his warmth.
