Eva struggled against her restraints even though she knew it was pointless. Hot tears ran down her temples and soaked into her hair. She glared at Shelly and Mark, cursing them through the dirty cloth wedged between her teeth. She looked away from them toward Quincy. He was moving, but she didn't think there'd be much help coming from him. Alex had hit him pretty hard.

She turned her attention to Alex, twisting her head to look at him. She jerked in surprise when she noticed a figure crouched behind him.

She looked back at Shelly and Mark, and was surprised to see more figures lurking in the shadows behind them.

What ...

"Eva, you're very sick. Now, just lie still and let the good doctor make you all better."

Eva's eyes flashed to Shelly. She made herself focus on the crazed woman's face, trying not to give away the fact that, behind her, figures were moving in close. Eva only hoped that whatever was creeping near meant to help her, not harm her.
