It was late last year
when she told me.
We were laying on the couch together, watching some
Adam Sandler comedy at my house
around 1 in the morning.

"I'm not normal," she said
in the middle of a punchline.

"Me either," I gave her a
comforting smile, but she said it was different in her case.

"I've been seeing someone," she confessed, but I wasn't quite following.
At the time, she, a cheerleader,
was dating a football player,
the clichéd high school couple
you'd see in the movies.
I was confused and immediately thought the worst about her,
various vile names running
through my mind to call her.

"You can't screw around with another guy! You have Grant," I objected, sitting straight up
against her shaking body.
But she told me
it was a girl.
And as she started crying,
saying her parents would kill her,
and no one would accept her,
I put the pieces together.
