Instead of studying in the morning, Midnight decided to study at lunch. After all, he couldn't have studied in the morning because his teacher had to talk to him. Lunch was longer, so maybe it was better that way.
Lunch was longer after all. And would give him more time to study. Midnight grabbed his lunch from the cafe, then ran outside to the backgrounds, making sure he had had his study guide sheet with him, gazing over it quickly. Earlier during the previous class after Midnight had finished his work, he decided to finish the study guide, print it and highlight what he needed to know. Which was mostly the vocabulary.
Hopefully it would help. Or so much so he would pass the next quiz.
The backgrounds were empty when he opened the doors, it was cold and filled with thick air. Midnight could see his breath as he blowed out, mist filling the air. Mist that smelled thickly of rain. He skipped over to the small old playground, the old one that was active when the school was an Elementary school. And sat on the swing. Pulling out his binder and study guide.
Midnight looked over the sheet. 'Okay..remember the vocabulary and--' He looked back to the other side of the sheet. Blank. 'Ugh..Printed it wrong again.' He thought. Annoyed, he went back to his binder to look for it. Flipping the sheets didn't show anything important, not finding the other side. 'No. I need to pass this quiz!' Midnight was going to rush inside to look in his locker, but heard three footsteps approach, standing above him. Midnight stayed silent.
They continued to stand above him, still, breaths being felt touching the top of his head. Continuing to stay frozen, he tried to breath. But the strong breaths got caught in his throat. Midnight felt a hand slap the side of his face, then one on his throat. Another person's leg kicked his shin. "Haha, look at him," A deep voice spoke. Laughing at his own words, his friends laughed after he did. "Studying like a good boy. How cute."
Suddenly, before Midnight could even go over anymore words, the paper was yanked out of his hands. "Hey!"
"Oh!" The boy cried when Midnight looked up. "It speaks! I thought the mute would stay silent forever."
"Ah but you see," Another boy spoke up. "It only speaks for a short time. It's so quiet that it can't even ask for help from the teacher! No wonder it's failing!" He cackled, along with small giggles from his friends. "I'm not--failing! I just don't understand!" Midnight grabbed his paper back from the hands. "Go away, leave me alone!"
"OOO feisty." He grabbed it back. "What should we do guys?"
"I think we should--." He paused. Then taking the paper from his friend. But he didn't speak. 'Why can't they just leave?..I need to study!' Midnight glanced to the ground, where his paper landed. Before he could jump and steal it back, a foot hit it harshly to the ground. Rubbing it into the soft earth. He was stunned. And didn't move at that moment. He really couldn't, panic flooded over him, his bones and muscles froze. It prevented Midnight from moving. "Aren't you going to say something?" One of their faces stuck in his face. He could smell his breath reeking the strong scent of cigarettes. "Or will you be the pussy you always are?"
Midnight shook his head. "I would like you to leave me alone," He hissed, trying to stand up, only to be pushed down onto the ground by the same guy. "No," He replied simply. Wide eyes with sarcasm. "We won't."
