His heart hurt. It sank and broke into the ground. The pain in his arms got stronger. Tears stung his eyes. They wanted to come out. He couldn't let them.

'No! What did I do?! My feelings. Everything! Why did I ruin everything!'

People walked by but their footsteps were just echos. He could feel glares at him, questioning what he was doing. Eventually, the bell rang but he could hardly hear it.

Minutes passed, the hallway was empty. And all he could hear was himself beginning to cry. He stood up.

Midnight curved around the corner, his heartache making it hard to breathe. Hard to walk. He was shaking. His hands could hardly hold his bag on his shoulder.

Suddenly everything felt as light as air, his squinting eyes saw dark purple surround him. Then, he was home. In his room. He dropped his bag straight on the floor. His knees slammed to the ground. His hands landed on his head.

How could this happen? What did he do wrong? He was so worried about Nick for so long that it was a waste now. Being worried about him for him to just--leave. To tell the truth.

Was it even the truth?

~~~~~~
The day was slow. Time had slowed down more than he ever thought. Maybe he was being dramatic; but he felt different about him. About Nick. He was nice, and--he couldn't say it. He didn't want to now. It was useless even trying.
He knew he could try and talk to Nick again. It was only once. And that was when Nick was angry. Midnight still wasn't sure why he was so mad. The car accident had to have done something. It broke his arm, it could have done something else too.
Soon enough, after being in his bed for an hour, he heard a knock at his door. And he knew why. "Midnight. Are you in here?"
He stayed silent.
"Hey. You really shouldn't skip school. You still have to work with the teachers on your work. The semester is almost over."
Silent.
The door opened. He didn't bother to move. His mother sat on the corner of his bed and put a hand on his shoulder. She squeezed, and he could almost feel her sympathy. "Hey. What happened?"
He sniffled. "I don't want to talk about it." He mumbled quietly.
"Are other kids bothering you?" 'No.' "Is it your grades?" 'No.' "Is it Nick?" He felt his heart beat stop. 'Yes.'
Fawn stopped asking. She knew. He didn't even need to say it, she knew. "Oh Mid. I'm--I'm sorry. What happened?"
"We had a fight."
"Why?"
"I don't know. He was angry. I was confused." He rolled over to look at her. "How most fights go right?" Fawn's gaze shifted to the bed. "I guess." Her hand went back to his shoulder. "Look maybe he's having a bad day. He'll get over it."
"I believe it's more than that." He countered.
"Anyway. You need to go back to school. I got a call from your homeroom teacher saying you didn't come in today. I was worried. Until I figured you came back home. Someone told your teacher you were in distress in the hall." She stopped. "Did you use your magic to get back?"
He nodded.
"You risked exposure." He nodded again. "I know."
Fawn took a deep breath. "You know what? I'll say you came down with something today so you texted me to get you. Just today. This will not be the case tomorrow."
He didn't want to argue. So he just said: "Ok."
~~~~~~

Midnight: "Hey Nick. Please explain what happened today? I would like to talk to you about something else as well. Thanks."

No response. It didn't even send. The check mark was empty. Nick was active. He was probably just busy.

Or not.

Dinner was awkward. They had spagetti, which was usually his favorite food, but this time he couldn't eat. He wasn't hungry. He just sat on the couch next to his sister, stirring his food. Everyone was laughing; Besides him.

He was like this one gloomy shadow sitting in a room full of sunshine. 'I love being the sadness of the family.'

Dawn slowly chewed her food looking at her brother. "What's up with you?"

"A lot." Midnight replied.

"School?"

"No."

"Nick?"

Of course she would ask. "Yeah."

She took another bite of her food. Putting the fork down, she was quiet. The room was quiet. And everyone was looking at him. Lilly and Fawn were looking at each other. "Um..What happened?" Lilly asked.

"Like it's any of your business." Midnight snapped.

"It is my business. I'm your mother. It's also my business because of exposure. Did you think before teleporting? You need to be more careful." Lilly snapped back.

Midnight slammed his plate back onto the coffee table. "How many times do I have to say it before you get the hint. You're not my mother. You are just my moms girlfriend. That doesn't give you the right to call yourself my parent. And that doesn't give you the right to blame me for almost exposing my powers. You only became a guardian because you died. You hardly have the right to tell me anything about my powers." Midnight shoved passed Dawn and up the stairs.

He got to his room with a slamming of his door. Sinking down the door, he looked up slightly to his bedside table.

The blade. The blade was straight in his view.

~~~~~
He didn't even want to wake up the next morning, it was already draining enough to be overthinking everything, overthinking that Nick would talk to him like nothing happened the day before. It was a cheesy thought. A stupid thought. He picked up his phone to check the time.
No texts. No calls. Nothing. Not even from Noah. Which wasn't that odd. Noah was Nicks friend.
Midnight sulked to his closet, picking out a normal outfit of a plain red t-shirt, thick black sweater and jeans.
He picked up his bag to run down the stairs. Fawn was waiting for him at the door like usual. She had her glasses on instead of her contacts. "How are you?"
"Fine. Let's just go."
