"I was surprised to see your name on an application."

"Surprised? Elaborate, please."

"It's just that I didn't think you were doing so... great in life."

"Oh, well, in that case, I am doing exceptional. I recently moved back here to be closer to family after I received my Ph.D. and taught at UCLA for a while as you know from my application. I recently finished my temporary job teaching at a prison and now I have way too much time with my five kids, four of which came from your son. Gosh, I'm so thankful for Terrence, he gave me some of the greatest gifts."

"Well, I am relieved to know you're doing so great. Terrence told me you just up and left with the kids, he said something about drugs."

I chuckled bitterly, "He's always been a compulsive liar."

"You're right about that. I'm just curious as to why you left though."

"I deserved better."

"He learned from his father."

"I'm not sure I follow."

"He learned from his father," she repeated, "After you suddenly left and took the kids I realized the same things his father has done to me, he was doing to you. I didn't catch on until it was too late, you were already broken and he was already a monster. When I felt I deserved better I took my kids and left, just like you. Who's to dwell on the past though? How are my grandchildren?"

"I came here to discuss a job and if you were so concerned you would know Keith walks the halls of this school every day."

"I've been keeping my eyes on Keith and I can tell you right now he's not going down the best path. His grades are slipping, he shows up whenever he pleases and he's hanging with the thugs that are here trespassing to make a few dollars. If I know you like I remember I know you don't approve. Save him before it's too late, trust me I've already made that mistake."

"So do I have the job or not?" I asked ignoring her last few remarks.

"A fellow staff member was fired for misconduct so the job is yours, you start the following Monday after Thanksgiving."

"Thanks," I said grabbing my purse.

"You know what number to dial if you ever want to talk and I live in the same house if you wanna stop by with the grandkids."
