December arrived quickly and Professor Sprout was going around collecting names of students who would be staying at Hogwarts for the holidays. You signed your name down as soon as you overheard that Draco was staying at Hogwarts, surprisingly enough. You didn't catch enough of the conversation to know why exactly he was staying, but you knew that the trio would suspect him, and so it was up to you to prove them wrong.

You didn't want to ask Hermione how the potion was coming along, worried that you'll ruin your friendship more than you already had. Nonetheless, you hoped that she'd stick to her word and give you some. You had an idea of who you'd be turning into — Pansy Parkinson. She sat right next to you in History of Magic, so it was the obvious choice. It would be easy to pluck a hair off her, and it was unlikely anyone would notice.

It was Thursday afternoon, and you were retiring to your common room after a horrendous Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson with Professor Lockhart. Thankfully it had been cut short as Lockhart needed to respond to his fan mail. That was when you heard a loud explosion coming from the dungeons, where the Potions classroom was.

You quickly rushed down the stairs to investigate the matter at hand, only to see the Gryffindors and Slytherins yelling and running around the classroom frantically.

You stifled a laugh when you saw Draco looking like he was about to cry: his nose had swelled up to the size of a balloon. You could only assume this was the doing of Fred's Filibuster firework. He'd told you about his plans for it last year, but clearly he'd actually gone and made it.

But Draco hadn't gotten the worst of the impact: there were students wobbling towards Snape's desk to get the antidote with arms the size of clubs and ears the size of dinner plates. It was truly a sight to behold.

"If I ever find out who threw this," Snape whispered as he pulled out the charred remains of the firecracker from under the desk, silencing the class, "I shall make sure that person is expelled."

You glanced at Harry who was clearly the one responsible. Harry was trying ever so hard to feign confusion, and Snape was looking directly at him. Unfortunately, you stood rather obviously in the doorway, and Snape's eyes fell on you.

"(L/n)," he drawled. You gulped, realising what came next. The Slytherins and Gryffindors had their eyes on you as Snape walked towards you.

"Did you throw this?" He held up the burnt firecracker.

You frantically shook your head in fear.

"Then what are you doing here?" Snape hissed, before checking the time. "And out of class?"

"L-Lockhart let us out early —" You tried explaining before you were cut off.

"Detention." He snapped. "Wandering where you shouldn't be will get you in all kinds of trouble. Better you learn that now than later."

"But sir —" You protested before the bell rang, interrupting you and indicating that class was officially over. Snape promptly dismissed you with a wave of his hand.

You walked to your common room, hearing Slytherin sneer at you, and some Gryffindors whispering about what just happened. You balled your fists in frustration. You were just at the wrong place at the wrong time! It wasn't your fault! Snape didn't have to call you out like that and embarrass you in front of everyone, it wasn't fair.

So much had happened that wasn't fair. You had to have detention in the Forbidden Forest last year just because you forgot your bag in the Astrology Tower. You didn't get credited for helping the trio find and save the Philosopher's Stone, and as much as you told your friends that it didn't bother you, it really did. And now... and now this. This was just the cherry on top.
