Self-implemented rule for Tia. No dates during Basketball Season. The season is too busy and there is barely time for homework. Let alone boys. The crew hangs with me at school and Phillip makes time for me when he can. He is wicked busy too during the season. Most weeknights Phillip has games and some weekends and so do I. My stats are impressive for a ninth grader. Coach said if I keep it up, I could join Varsity during the play offs.
My next home game, starts off with Coach's usual Pep Talk. Randy, Jake, Gary and Tim take their seats on the bleachers. Randy gives me a nod. He is doing this to let me know that he sees me. Phillip, Jim and the Varsity Boys finish practice early. Their game is tomorrow night. Jim nor Phillip has seen me play much. They are either playing or practicing during my games. The team takes the court as our names are called. Of course, the Boys whistle.
The game is in the fourth quarter and we are up by ten. The JV Girls are 12 and 0 on the season. We don't get titles or playoffs. The squad is proud of our accomplishment. Tonight is the tough girls from Henrico. We would love to shut them down. I have to focus on the outside game because inside these girls are brutal. I am passed the ball to set up for an outside shot. I have done this so much tonight, their forward charges me. When I come down, she trips me and my knee takes the fall. There is a Pop and I am in agony on the floor.
The Gym goes silent. The trainer rushes out to me like they did with Phillip. He asks me a series of questions. My knee hurts so damn bad I only answer a few. Jim and Phillip are pacing back and forth under the goal post because they are not allowed to come on the court. Randy and the Boys jump to their feet. Both and all want to charge the court. In my pain muddled mind, I think how I need them right now. Tears are streaming down my face. I cannot hold them back. This pain is so intense.
Someone picks me up and puts me on a stretcher. In a matter of seconds, Jim is by my side in the Ambulance. He is calling Mom and Dad. The emergency workers give me pain medicine and euphoria takes over. "Jim this hurts. Please tell me its not damaged and I can still play." I beg.
"Shh baby sis. You will be alright. Mom and Dad are on their way. Let the meds help." Jim takes my hand.
At the hospital, the doctor waits for my parents to arrive to receive permission to take x-rays. They are not to far behind the ambulance. "Tia, please tell me you are not hurting too bad." Mom holds my hand.
"I am fine. The ceiling is pretty from here." I am not making any sense. My brain on these pain killers is no joke. After the x-rays, the doctor comes in and explains to my parents the knee is dislocated. "Dislocated." I try to form a sentence but give up and tune out the world. The nurse puts a little more meds in my IV and holds me down.
"What is happening?" I begin to panic. Before Mom can hold my hand, I hear another pop and the pain instantly stops. The doctor tells us healing will take a few days. He scolds me and tells me to keep my leg propped up and no weight on it for a few days. My parents pile me in the car after the doctor put a brace on my knee. Jim says something about telling Phillip and I smile. I have no idea what anyone is saying to me. Best not to respond.
My new bedroom is the guest room downstairs. Jim helps mom bring some of my stuff down. My phone is buzzing out of control. Not sure if I should respond to anyone in this state. What's the harm right. What could possibly go wrong?
