A month later I was driving several underclassmen to Stucky's before a track meet when I walked straight into the last people I expected to see.
Gary.
Jake.
Justin.
Randy.
Months of avoiding them, and fate still dropped us into the same restaurant.
Gary and Jake hurried over and hugged me tight.
We'd talked here and there over the past month, but nowhere near as much as they wanted.
I'd already told them why.
"It's the company you keep."
Then I noticed the girl practically draped across Randy.
Figures.
Justin walked over before I could make my escape.
"Long time no see, stranger."
He looked me up and down before pointing toward my track uniform.
"Trying out a new look?"
I smiled.
"Trying to earn a varsity letter."
He laughed.
"Looks like it's agreeing with you."
"Thanks."
I could feel Randy watching me from across the room, but he never came over.
Fine.
Stay there with Miss Perfect.
Why do you even care, Tia?
I glanced toward the clock.
"Gotta run. Meet starts soon."
I ushered the younger girls toward the door.
As I stepped outside, I resisted the urge to look back.
I wasn't playing games anymore.
If Randy wanted to stare, that was his problem.
Mine was waiting at the starting line.
After the meet, I unlocked my car and immediately spotted a folded note lying on the driver's seat.
That ass broke into my car.
I unfolded it.
Tia,
You are never far from my mind, and seeing you today drove me crazy.
I need to talk to you.
Please come by the apartment.
—Randy
I sighed.
Then I pulled out my phone.
I can't do this anymore.
You were right the first day we met. I'm too slow for you.
The day I came to your apartment, I was coming to tell you I was walking away so you could find someone who matched your pace.
You'll find the girl who belongs with you.
It's just not me.
"I can't live without you. I've tried. Please... just give me five minutes." — Randy
I stared at the screen for a long moment before answering.
"I have a date. You are way too old for me in more ways than one. I'm not playing these games anymore." — Tia
