“I’d like to call Lacy Scott to the stand,” Demarco announced.
“Go on,” Lillian whispered.
I slowly made my way up and sat in the chair, “do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you god?” a guard asked me. (Again, movies are my guide to this shiz)
“I do,” I told him the gulped loudly.
“How are you feeling today Lacy?” Demarco asked.
“Alright, a little nervous and scared”
“Why are you nervous and scared Lacy?”
“To see Joy again and for the verdict that come later on”
“Why are you nervous and scared for the verdict?”
“Because I don’t want to go with her today”
“And why not Lacy?”
“Because of all the memories I associate with her,” I replied.
“What are some of those memories Lacy?”
“The night of my semi-formal, she was really high and when she saw me dressed up to go out she…hit me. Told me I couldn’t go, that no one would ever love me and I’d never amount to anything. Then I remember the first time I saw her take drugs. She had a belt tightly around her arm and a needle under her skin. She told me she was sick and the doctor told her to do it. Then I remember the first time Markus asked about it. He was four and I was ten. I had to tell him that they were lollies only adults could have,” I said, feeling myself start to get emotional at the memories.
“And on your last year of high school you dropped out. Am I right?” I nod. “Why was that dear?”
“We had no money. We only got money from the state but that hardly paid for the electricity and utilities then have money left over for food. We pretty much always had the lights off so we didn’t use lots of power. So I got a job at one of the only places that would take a sixteen-year-old, high school drop out. Markus was fussy so he lived on a diet of Coco-Pops and milk with mixed in Nutella. I wasn’t able to buy more because had to pay for credit for my cheap phone in case Markus’s school ”
“And what did you eat?”
“Nothing mainly. If we had enough I’d buy some bread so I could have toast but that was about it really”
“And what was it like, emotionally, living with Joy?”
“I blocked her out most of the time. She was always high and sometimes even drunk and she became very verbally abusive. She always told me it was my fault my dad left and that everything messed up in her life was my fault. When I used to ask when my dad was coming back she’d slap me”
“What is your overall opinion of your mum?”
“She’s not my mother. I used to think of her as that but after living with Chris and Lillian for this period of time, I think of Lillian as my mother. Joy, you are a horrible women who disserves to be lonely for the rest of your life. I don’t care if you’re sober because one day you’ll tell yourself that you’ll have a little bit for old time’s sake but then you’ll get hooked again and I personally don’t want to be there when that happens”
“Thank you Lacy. No further questions your honour,” Demarco said then sat back in his chair.
“Hello Lacy,” Joy’s lawyer smiled.
“Hi”
“How long has it been since you’ve seen joy?”
“Over half a year,” I answered.
“Do you remember what happened the night of your accident?”
“My boyfriend and I had previously gotten into an argument and we broke up. I got home, got wasted and stabbed myself…twice. Markus found me in my room, everything broken and me sobbing on the floor with bleeding hands. So he took me down stairs to clean me up…that’s when Joy appeared. She told me I was pathetic for having my little brother help clean me up. I then told her the truth. That she was the reason that my dad left and that it wasn’t fair on Markus that she was the way she is. She then slapped me because she couldn’t handle the truth and when I went to slap her back I passed out. That’s’ when the paramedics were called and they found her addiction on the coffee table in the living room”
“Pretty heavy stuff”
“Especially having to grow up in it. Stuff like that scared me emotionally pretty bad”
“Why did you have reluctance to go with Chris when he reappeared in your life?”
I looked at my dad and smiled, “because he left me with her for ten years. Then after my amnesia went away I realised that he is a good person”
“You had amnesia?” he asked and my face dropped.
“Yes I did”
“For how long?”
“Two months I think”
“And how did you get amnesia?”
“I was at my friend Jezzy’s house and after we watched the fireworks with our boyfriends a drunk driver drove onto her front yard and hit me,” I explained.
“And when was this?”
“October and November of last year”
“Ok. No further questions”
