“Where have you been?” Joy asked after I walked through the front door.
“With the girls,” I mumbled then pushed past her.
“Come back here. I’m not done talking to you,” she stated.
“I was done talking to you before you were released from prison”
“That was a long time ago,” she tried to bullshit me.
“Three months Joy. It’s been three fucking months so don’t try and pull that crap on me,” I spat then walked into my room, slamming the door as hard as I could.
My “new room” was pretty empty. I had my bed, a desk, some of my clothes and my laptop. I refused to take my clothes and shoes out of my suitcase because I was adamant I wouldn’t be staying in my own personal hell.
“I missed you,” Markus told me.
“Hey bud. Yeah, sorry. I should have come home to hang out with you but I just didn’t think. Forgive me?”
“I’ll always forgive you,” he said, rushing over to bare hug me.
“I just wish we could get out of here,” I whispered as I rubbed his back.
“I miss mum and dad”
“What about Steve?”
“He’s barely spoken to me since we got here. Chris is really my dad. Well in my mind he is”
“I’m sure you’re his son in his mind too mate”
“When do we get to see them again?”
“Hopefully this weekend”
“I hope so. This has been hell”
“I know”
A knock on the door caught our attention, “dinner’s being served,” Steve told us.
“Let’s get this over with,” I said, mustering the best smile I could.
We sat next to each other at the table and Joy put a plate in front of us. The plates held what appeared to be mashed potatoes and some sort of stewed meat. I took my fork and tried to eat as quick as I could so I could leave.
“How was school?” Joy asked.
“Fine,” I answered.
“Fine,” Markus replied.
“Guys, can you please put in a little more effort”
“You’re lucky we’re putting in any effort at all,” I told her.
“Don’t talk to her like that,” Steve told me.
“Listen mate. No offence but you have no jurisdiction over either of us. She, unfortunately, has custardy over us not you. I don’t gave a shit if you tell me to do something, I don’t have to do it. And if you lay so much as a hand on either of us I will be calling triple zero faster than you can say fuck me. Ok? I am not someone you want to mess with, believe me. May I be excused?” I asked.
“Uh…sure,” Joy said.
“Me too?” Markus asked.
“Go ahead,” we left the table and went to my room before lying on my bed.
Markus snuggled his head in my side before taking a deep breath, “Lacy?”
“Yeah mate?”
“When was the last time you spoke to Luke?”
“I don’t know bud. Probably a week or so. Maybe a little longer. Why?”
“I didn’t get to talk to him after the hearing,” he answered.
“I’ve tried calling him but he won’t pick up,” I said, rubbing my fingers soothingly against his scalp.
“Why not?”
“He’s probably busy. I’m not actually sure”
“Can you try and get him to pick up? I miss him and I need someone, a guy, to talk to”
“If he doesn’t pick up do you want me to get Ash so you can talk to him?”
“Yes please”
“Alright”
“Lacy?”
“Yeah bud?” I chuckled.
“Do you think dad could win us back?”
“I hope so. I don’t think I’ll be able to last very long here”
“Me too”
“What do you think about…running away?”
“What?”
“One day when we jut can’t take it anymore…we run away and hide with someone until the grown ups see that they made a huge fucking mistake. We could maybe go and stay with Liz, she’ll understand”
“I like that idea”
“Really?”
“Yeah. It’s a really good idea”
“Just not yet. Maybe next week or something”
“Ok”
“I love you Markus. I don’t tell you that enough”
“It doesn’t matter. I know you do. And I love you too”
