“I would like to call Markus Scott to the stand,” Joy’s lawyer announced.

“I don’t want to,” he told me.

“It’s ok. I’ll be right her and you can look at me the whole time,” I told him as I rubbed his back.

“It’s ok buddy. You’re going to be fine,” Chris told him.

“I’m scared,” he whimpered, tears filling his eyes.

“I know you are but you have to be brave go up there. Just think of everyone as babies and you’ll be ok”

“Can I talk to Luke after this?” I gave him a nod and he smiled.

He walked up to the chair and took the oath before looking at me. I gave him thumbs up and he gave me one back.

“hello Markus”

“Hi,” he said quietly.

“You’re Lacy’s little brother. Correct?”

“Yes”

“And this women, Joy Stevenson is your mother,” he shook his head. “Oh? Who is your mother then?”

“Technical, on my birth certificate Joy is my mother, but I conceder Lacy as my mother more than anyone”

“Is that so?” he just nod. “Why is that?”

“You heard Lacy before. She dropped out of school so she could feed and clothe me. Me gave me the love that the woman you’re defending didn’t. And I was one bad brother. I did so many things to her that would send any normal person insane and make them hate me forever, but Lacy still loves me. She’s done more for me than anyone else”

“And do you know your dad?”

He shook his head, “he was long gone before I was born”

“Do you think of Chris as a father to you?”

“Yes I do and Lillian is a close second as a mother”

“Believe it or not Markus, but the man sitting beside Joy is your father,” I heard a few gasps and my head snapped towards the man.

It made sense now. He and Markus shared the same hair and eye colour. He stared at the man at the table then back at me. I shook my head lightly as I bit my lip.

“I don’t care,” Markus told him. “He’s not my dad. Chris is my dad”

“Alright. No more question”

“No questions either your honour,” Demarco announced.

“I’d like to call Joy Stevens to the stand,” her lawyer told us.

She gave the oath before smiling to her lawyer, “Joy, are you ashamed of your actions leading to your addiction?”

“I really am. I wish I could take back what I did to Chris, Lacy and Markus but I can not so I have to live with my actions and hope that in time you three will be able to forgive me”

“How long have you been sober now Joy?”

“About nine months,” she smiled.

“Can I just say something?” I asked standing up.

“Lacy,” Chris whispered.

“Go ahead,” Judge White told me.

“I was told that you were in prison for six months”

“That’s right”

“And it’s been nine months. Why have you just decided to come back now and ruin my life again?” I asked.

“I’m still on probation but it’s taken us a while to build a case,” she answered.

“Just why? Why try and take us back when there is a over a seventy percent chance of relapse?”

“Because you are my children and I want to take care of you again”

“You’ve never taken care of Markus. That’s always been my job,” I shouted.

“Lacy just please sit down,” Chris pleaded.

“It’s not fair that she’s even getting another chance! I hate her and she shouldn’t get this right”

“Can we please just take her outside to cool her off?” Chris asked the judge.

“We’ll have a ten minute break,” she announced then pounded her gavel.

“Lacy, I know you think you’re helping but you’re probably making it worse,” Chris told me quietly.

“I just don’t want to go back dad,” I said, feeling my eyes well up.

“I know baby. Even if she does get you, we’ll get to see each other all the time”

“Don’t even indulge the idea of her winning. If she does I’m running away”

“Don’t be so rash Lacy”

“Being rash would be shooting myself in the face. Which I would gladly do if she won”
