The sun was just starting to rise and it was time to take action. I pushed back the covers and swung my legs over the side. I grabbed my boots and duffle bag from under my bed and tiptoed to Markus’ room. I opened his door silently and saw him sleeping.
“Markus,” I whisper yelled.
“I’m awake,” he whispered back before getting himself out of bed and grabbing his shoes and bag as well.
We crept down the hall until we got to the front door. When we got there I put my boots on and Markus put his sneakers on. I made sure I had the money I’d gotten for us to get breakfast on the way and opened the door, embracing the cold.
“You ready? Or do you want to back out?” I asked quietly.
“I’m so ready to leave,” he told me with a smile.
I smiled back and ruffled his hair before stepping out first. He followed behind and waited as I shut the door as silently as I could. The click of my heels against the pavement was all the could be heard besides the rustling of the tree branches in the cold wind.
“Where are we going?” Markus asked after we exited the street.
“To McDonalds for breakfast then to Sam’s,” he looked at me for a moment before taking in the information.
“Sam. As in Sam-Sam?” I nod and he nod. “Alright. At least I’ll get to see Katie”
“There you go”
“And if he doesn’t?”
“I have a backup”
“Which is?”
“Liz and Andrew’s. Hopefully they’ll look after us”
“I would have thought they’d have been your first choice”
“They probably would have sold us out because they believed it was for the best. But I’m sure if it comes to us staying there then they’ll respect our wishes and value our opinions”
“How long has it been since you last spoke to Sam?”
“A couple of days”
“Talking to another man behind Luke’s back,” he teased.
“Sam’s just a friend you little shit. And besides, Luke is happy for us to hang out and be friends”
“Really?” he asked in disbelief.
“Yes. He has female friends so I’m allowed male friends”
“But this is Sam. You used to date Sam and he knows that”
“Yes but I chose Luke over Sam. Wait! That sounded so mean. Ok. I wasn’t ready to move on from Luke and Sam understands that so that’s why we couldn’t be together”
“Just make sure you know what you’re doing”
“You sound like an adult. I don’t like it”
“Meh,” he shrugged then got giddy when he was the McDonalds.
Inside the restaurant was toasty and warm. Markus sat in a booth while I went up and ordered. Once I had done so I leant against the wall near the serving space. I pulled out my phone to check the time. It was rearing six.
To Sam I Am- text me when you get this. Sorry if you’re dumb enough to leave your sound on and I wake you.
The overtired cashier pushed a tray containing my order towards me and I smiled before walking off with it. I sat on the opposite side of the booth and handed Markus his food and drink. He took a sip of his thick shake before smiling at me.
“It’s nice being up at this time,” he told me.
“You’re lucky you’re on holidays kid,” I smiled.
“You think they’re up yet?”
“Who cares?”
“True. True. Do you ever think about what life would be like if Joy never cheated on dad?”
“All the time. But then I wouldn’t have gotten you”
“Yeah you would have”
“Yes but you wouldn’t have been…you. I love who you are”
“Thanks. But you wouldn’t have met Luke either”
“Shit! You’re right. But I still hate her”
“Agreed”
I heard my phone go off and I pulled it from my pocket.
