Lillian was tired. Chris was tired. I was wide awake. As Chris and Lillian stood side by side in the kitchen I held Jonah close to my chest.
“I’m so tired and it’s only been a week,” Lillian mumbled.
“Agreed,” Chris said.
“You guys are so funny,” I said, stifling a laugh.
“You try getting up every hour to feed her,” Lillian said with a slight glare.
“I can hear her from the other end of the house,” I smiled.
“You don’t have to feed her,” Chris reminded me.
“In case you’ve forgotten, I kinda can’t”
“Fuck off,” he told me.
“Ok. I’m going to watch cartoon with this one,” I said sliding off the stool and walked into the lounge room.
Fairy Odd Parents was on the TV as Markus sat on the couch. I sat beside him and he looked at Jonah.
“Can I hold her?” he asked.
I shrugged then carefully handed her to him. He stared at her in admiration and I couldn’t help but smile. I took my phone from my pyjama shorts pocket and snapped a picture.
“That was unfair,” he whined.
“It’s to preserve the memory. Markus with his baby sister,” I teased. “Have you spoken to Harry lately?”
“We’re meeting up to play soccer later,” he answered.
“That’s awesome”
“I feel bad for Harry”
“Why bud?”
“He says that no one at his school likes him”
“Did he say why?”
“Because he’s small,” he pouted.
“You’re small. Just tell him that you can be small together,” he gave me a smile before looking back at the TV.
“Harry says that Lauren gets bullied too”
“Really?”
“Yes. And that Ashton use to as well”
“I knew that Ashton use to. People can be so mean sometimes”
“Yeah”
“Have those boys started being mean to you again?”
There was silence for a while before he looked at me again, “yes”
“What have they been doing?”
“Pushing me around. Saying that no one likes me. Saying I’m a freak”
“Looks like I have to go back down and hit them this time”
“They said that they aren’t scared of you”
“Oh really?”
“Yeah. They said that you’re just a girl”
“What about those boxing moves Chris taught you. Why don’t you hit them back?”
“I did once but I got into trouble”
“Why?”
“Because the teacher only saw me hit them not them hit me”
“That’s unfair”
“They make me want to move schools”
“Why don’t we talk to Chris about it? Maybe you can move to Harry’s school. Then you two can be best friends and get to see each other all the time”
“That sounds good”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. I love you Lacy”
“I love you to Markus”
“What do we do now?”
“What do you mean?”
“Now Joy’s gone”
“We be normal kids. Well…as normal as we can be. No more custardy battles, no more drugs, no more abandonment. Just you, me and Jonah against the world”
“Will I be able to teach her to play soccer?”
“Yes bud, you will,” I smiled and ruffled his hair.
“When’s Luke coming home again?”
“We’re just burning through topics this morning, aren’t we? He comes back on Monday,” I smiled.
“Are you going to the airport to see him?”
“Probably”
“Can I come?”
“If you want”
“Thanks Lacy”
“It’s alright bud”
