“Why can’t I just go to school?” Markus asked, obviously as unhappy about the situation as I was.

“Because they need to talk to both of you today,” Chris told him.

“I don’t want to see her,” I told them.

“I know sweetie but you have to,” Lillian told me.

“I don’t have to speak to her do I?”

“Not if you don’t want to”

“Oh thank the heavens,” I said, breathing a sigh of relief.

I looked down at my freshly painted nails and resisted the urge to pick at them. The black polish reflected the light, vaguely showing the car door. I pulled out my phone to distract myself and clicked the message app. I clicked Luke’s name and started typing a message. I reread the mass text a few times before highlighting it all and deleting it.

To- My Sexy Lucas- Miss you

I pressed the top button, shutting it off before bringing my eyes to my brother. He looked really nervous and scared. I grabbed his hand and held it tight, him giving it a squeeze.

“We’re here guys,” Chris told us.

We got out of the car and Markus quickly ran to me, grabbing my hand again. We walked behind Chris and Lillian and saw a few people looking at us. Once we were inside we had to go through metal detectors and stuff before getting to sit on the uncomfortable, leather chairs. When I caught a glimpse of the curled, blonde locks I felt my heart sink. She was dressed nicely, for probably the first time in a very long time. She wore a tight black skirt that went to just above her knees, a matching blazer, a white, button up blouse tucked into her skirt and shiny black heels. She speared to be wearing natural make up much like myself and Lillian, except I had heavy eyeliner.

“Joy,” Chris said, acknowledging her presence.

“Hello Christian. Very nice to see you again,” she smiled, but it still held hints of evil. “My-my Lacy dear. Haven’t you grown up,” she smiled.

“I look very much the same as the last time I saw you,” I said rather coldly.

It was silent for a while then she looked beside, “hello Markus,” she smiled.

“Leave me alone,” he said then buried his face in my side.

“Case nine twenty-five,” a voice called so Chris gestured for us to stand.

“So this is Lacy and Markus,” a well-dressed man said suddenly joining us.

I recognised his voice very well, “Lacy, Markus this is…”

“Demarco Connors,” I cut in.

“Smart girl,” he smiled.

“You’re voice is very distinct. Don’t make us lose,” I told him.

“I’ll try my very best,” he smiled then lead us to where we were to sit.

We were on the left side of the room. Markus at the end closest to the wall, me sitting beside him, Lillian beside me, Chris next the lastly, Demarco. Joy was at the other table with to men I did not recognise. One had to be her lawyer and I had no idea who the other man was.

“All rise. The honourable Judge White residing,” a guard called. (I don’t even know if this is how it goes I’m just using movies as my guide)

“You may be seated,” she announced as she herself, sat down. “Case nine twenty-five. Joy Stevenson verses Christian and Lillian Scott,” she announced.

Joy’s lawyer babbled on about how she went in prison and how she’s been clean and how she believes she has the right to have us back. Chris was called to the stand first and Demarco was asking him all sorts of questions. After he was finished Joy’s lawyer decided he had a few questions of his own.

“So Christian. You were once married to my client, correct?”

“Yes I was”

“And why did that marriage end?”

“I found out she was having several affairs,” he answered.

“But you were ok with that?”

“I was…for a while”

“Then what happened?”

“I found out she was pregnant to one of those affairs”

“So you left?”

“I filled for divorce and then moved cities once the divorce was finalised, yes”

“Why did you leave?”

“I was angry at Joy and I had no idea what she was going to do”

“But you left Lacy, didn’t you?”

“Yes I did. And not a day goes by where I don’t wish I would have taken her with me. Maybe then she could have been raised better. But if I had taken her then Markus, surely would be dead”

“But after you were contacted after lacy…accident, there was resistance from the children. Am I correct?”

“There was some reluctance and objection, yes”

“Why was that?”

“I hadn’t seen Lacy for nearly ten years and I’d never met Markus before”

“And how did your wife, Lillian take to having to care for children that are not her own?”

“She too had some reluctance. But now she conceders them her own”

“And you Mr. Scott. How did you feel about finally getting to see your daughter after so many years away?”

“I was overjoyed, but scared”

“Why were you scared?”

“I’d missed some of the most important years of her life”

“But technically that was your doing. You didn’t need to move towns but you did. You left her then came back after ten years”

“If I didn’t take them in then they’d have been put with family member that don’t care about them. I love those two kids right there and I have treated Markus like he was my own since the day I met him”

“No further questions your honour,” her lawyer spoke.
