A decision

"Another nightmare?" Rey asked softly. I nodded slowly. Her hand dropped from my hair and she squeezed my hand, "I heard you screaming" she whispered.  I nodded again, shifting back on the bed until my back hit the headboard. Rey lay down next to where I sat, her eyes travelling over my bare upper body and then stopping on my face. "Rey?" I said turning my gaze to look at her in the dark room, "when we touched hands all that time ago, what did you see? I mean all of it, details, what did you see?". Rey propped herself up on her arm and looked at me for a moment before answering "We were together Ben.  Lying like this and you looked at me and told me that you would stand by me.  You said that you wouldn't leave me like my parents" Rey's voice trailed off then, tears beginning to spill down her cheeks.  I looked at her but made no move to comfort her, it was something that didn't come naturally to me and so instead I shifted uneasily and spoke, all the while looking into her damp eyes "I saw the same Rey.  You were lying with me. You spoke to me, you said "Ben I will stand by you, when the time comes you can count on me, I'll stand by you". Rey nodded then, sitting up and wiping her eyes, "So we are destined to be together, but how? I can't leave and you won't join me" Rey said solemnly, her fingers knitting together on her lap. I looked at her for a moment, taking in the sweet innocence and beauty and then I turned my body towards her, "Rey, I will come to you. Not to join the resistance, but to be with you. We are bound together by the force" I watched her eyes widen and a broad smile rush across her face. It struck me in that moment that I had never seen her properly happy and the sight of it made my stomach flutter. But then her smile faded just as quickly, "What will I tell my friends? They will think that I'm a traitor?" She said, her hands balling into tight fists by her side. "I'll protect you" I said softly. She looked at me then and nodded, her body sliding down until her head was resting on my chest, just like in my vision.
