A cold substance was spread on my stomach. It was chilly and sent shivers down my spine, but moments later I couldn't feel anything.
I laid there motionless, waiting for something to happen. I couldn't see, feel, or hear anything behind the blockage.
"It's okay." Ozzy comforted, rubbing his thumb against the back of my hand.
I didn't speak, but I gave him a soft look. I wasn't sure what I was allowed to do at the moment.
It was silent for awhile before crying broke through the room.
"It's a boy." A doctor announced, handing the baby over to a nurse.
Joy rushed over me as I saw a glimse of the black bundle being carried off.
"It's a girl." The doctor stated again, handing it off to another nurse.
"Another girl." The doctor smiled, but it faded quickly. "This one to emergency care now." He handed it off to the nurse.
My heart dropped, and I looked up at Ozzy. He was looking back at me with the same look of fear.
"Boy!" The doctor handed the bundle off quickly.
"Last, another girl." He said, giving it away.
The once crowed room had greatly decreased in population. 5 nurses had left, leaving one and two doctors.
They continued working, leaving me to sit and think. What had happened to my little girl?
Finally after what seemed like forever they were finished and put me in a room.
And nurse cane in with me and began to tell me all I needed to know about the healing process.
I listened closely, thought my mind was set on something else.
"What happened to my daughter?" I asked once she had finished.
Her face fell slightly. "She was, moved to emergency care. You'll find out more about her in a few. I'll bring your husband in for you." She cut off the conversation quickly.
She left and came back with my Ozzy. He was stafing at me with a mix of pride and sadness.
"You did so well Felix." He complimented, coming to sit by my bed.
"Thanks." I smiled half heartedly at the praise. I was too worried to be fully happy at the moment.
"It's okay." He brushed back the fur on my head. "It'll be okay."
We sat there for a good thirty minutes waiting for our children. We had decided we would name them once we saw them, to make sure the names fit.
Finally a knock came on the door and we perked up. "Come in." I said.
Four nurses and a doctor came into the room with four bundles. One was clearly missing.
I went to open my mouth, but the doctor held his hand up.
The room was silent as the nurses placed the babies in the bassinets near by and left.
Once they were gone the doctor sat down. "I'm sorry to have to bring such news, but your middle daughter did not make it." He said softly, his eyes filled with pity.
My eyes widened and my ears fell. Something inside me broke from hearing that.
"A-ah..." I tried to speak but the words got stuck in my throat.
"What happened to hurt?" Ozzy asked, his tone was cold and his eyes dark. He looked similar to how he did when I met him...when he was grieving over Ortensia.
"It was the only mix breed of the group, so complications were expected. During the pregnancy, her organs were unable to form properly due to the limited space and mixbreed qualities. It's body was being made from two separate species and the blueprints, if you will, for the body were effected. She was born without strong lungs, and a few extra organs that were not big enough to function properly." The doctor explained, looking down at his charts a few times.
My heart broke for this daughter. She was the unlucky one of the bunch. The only one who was victim to such fate.
"Her physical appearance wasn't messed up too badly. She still looks like a normal baby, just with characteristics from both of you." He added.
Everyone fell silent. It was a cold, dark silence.
"I'll leave you with each other. A nurse will be in soon for the birth certificates." He got up and excused himself from the room.
As soon as he was gone I just stared blankly at the door. I could have stayed like that forever, but a sound snapped me out of it. I turned to my left where the noise was coming from.
Oswald was crying.
