Kirk had talked to Bones about what should happen at dinner, and he couldn't wait to watch Spock squirm.
Jim was ready for the evening as they just wore their uniforms. The table was ready for the guests as the door buzzed with the first guest. Kirk went to let them in. Bones came in carrying a bottle of wine.
"Is that for medicinal purposes?" Kirk asked as the doctor grinned.
"It could be if Spock punches me by the end of the night," he said as he walked in.
"Nevertheless, I'm sure we'll need it," Kirk replied.
"Now we just have to wait for the happy couple," Bones grinned.
"Spock with my sister...just sounds weird."
"Well, at least he would be loyal. Just think of the pointy eared niece or nephew you could have," Bones laughed.
"Eh, I hope that's after a wedding..."
"Oh, come on. Spock's not that stupid," Bones said.
"Do you not remember Pon Farr? He nearly killed me!"
"All that lusting should be over with by now, I mean I guess this is his own desire at this point..."
"Can we just change the subject please?" Jim's voice cracked as the door went off again.
"Speak of the devil," Bones muttered as the captain let them in.
"Alex, Spock, come in," Kirk said as they did. Spock noticed Bone's bottle.
"I see the doctor has brought some of his Romulan ale," he said.
"Strictly medicinal purposes of course," Bones added as he waved at Alex. Alex waved back at her CMO.
"Yes, ever so strict," Spock said.
"Come on Spock, we're not being strict tonight, in fact, I thought we could play some poker," Jim said.
"Ah, yes, the old Earth card game," Spock said.
"Are we really going to play for money, or Monopoly money?" Alex joked as Jim looked at her.
"Hey, no parents here. It's the real deal."
"Monopoly money? Really?" Bones remarked with a laugh.
"We couldn't use real money unless mom and dad weren't home," Alex explained.
"Anyway, let's eat and then I can beat you all at poker," Jim said as they went to the table.
The meal went surprisingly well Alex thought. Bones sat to her left as Spock was by her right. Jim sat across from them as he poured everyone another glass of wine.
"I'll go get the cards," the captain said as Spock stood up.
"I'll assist you," he said as Jim nodded. Bones turned to Alex.
"Well I never thought I'd be able to say a Kirk looks attractive in uniform," the doctor said. Alex tried to hide her confused reaction. Perhaps the doctor had had too much wine and Romulan ale.
"I never thought I would be on the same ship as my brother," Alex remarked as she tried to change the subject.
"Oh, come on. He's the best captain Starfleet has had in years. Besides, you got to meet me," he said as he put a hand on her shoulder. Alex stared at him, not sure what to expect. Bones went for it, as his lips met hers. Alex was too stunned to react as she heard footsteps followed by an angry shout.
"McCoy!" Spock yelled as he grabbed the doctor's shoulder and punched him with his other hand. Alex stood straight up and tried to get in between the two. But much to Alex's surprise when the doctor turned to face them, he was grinning with a bloody nose.
"I knew it!" he exclaimed.
"Can someone please tell me what's going on?" Alex said as she looked at them all.
"I could ask the same about you two," Jim said. Spock and Alex shared a look.
"Fine, Spock and I, are um," Alex's voice trailed off.
"I believe your earth term is...dating," Spock said through gritted teeth. Jim grinned. Spock raised an eyebrow.
"You surprised at my reaction?" the captain said.
"Very much so captain."
"Well, I must say I am quite surprised, but I can't think of anyone else I could think of to be...good boyfriend material for my sister," Jim smiled.
"You're actually approving of someone I'm dating?" Alex spoke up.
"Mister Spock is quite a catch," Jim replied.
"Okay, I need another drink and a bandage," Bones groaned.
"Why did you do that?" Spock asked Bones.
"We had a theory we had to test. And it was successful."
"How?" Spock said.
"You punched Bones, I think that means you're jealous," Jim said as he could have sworn Spock blushed. He then crosses his arms.
"Do you have any Romulan ale left?" Alex asked the doctor.
They had played several rounds of poker before Alex began to yawn. She had successfully beaten her brother as they all turned in their cards.
"It seems I have another Kirk to beat at poker," Bones said as he put his cards down.
"It appears so Doctor," Spock agreed.
"Well, I'm calling it a night, I've got an early shift tomorrow," Bones said as he got up. They all said goodbye to the doctor as Spock took him aside for a moment.
"I am sorry about your nose," the Vulcan said.
"Oh, it was worth your reaction Spock. Besides I've got a nurse that can patch me up," Bones grinned as he looked at Alex.
"Just be thankful that is all Alex will patch up," Spock said.
"Hey, look Jim, he is the jealous type," Bones remarked. Alex could tell Spock was refraining from rolling his eyes.
"I am not a type doctor. Vulcans are logical," Spock said.
"Do you forget you are half human?" Bones replied.
"Did you forget you are working an early shift tomorrow?" he spat back. Alex grabbed Spock's arm.
"Okay boys, time to go," she said as Spock looked at her.
"See you tomorrow on the bridge," Jim said to Bones and Spock. Jim then stopped his sister for a moment."Just to be clear, I do approve of this," Jim said as he looked at Spock and Alex.
"But should it interfere with our mission..."
"It won't Jim," Spock said as the captain nodded.
"Then goodnight. I'll see you too tomorrow."
Spock and Alex left the captain's quarters as Alex sighed.
"Thank goodness that's over. I suppose the whole ship will know now..." she said as her voice trailed off.
"Is that not what you wanted?" Spock asked.
"I don't mind them knowing, but the gossip... And I don't want people to think of me poorly because you are first officer and my brother's best friend," Alex explained as Spock stopped in the hallway.
"There's an earth saying my mother told me. Those who matter don't mind, and those that do, don't matter. Perhaps this is one of those times," Spock suggested as Alex smiled softly.
"Somehow you always know what to say." Spock raised an eyebrow.
"It is only logical."
