I don't know what happened. One second I was driving fine, the next we were flying into a ditch. I could hear Alexandria crying, then right before we stopped rolling, it suddenly stopped. That's when I knew something was wrong. I knew Christina would be attempting to protect her, and I feel so bad that I couldn't. I guess we are lucky that Chris was back there.
I was the first one out of the car, so I was standing under their door, waiting for someone to come out. After a minute I see Alexandria's head poke out. She hesitates, then attempts to climb out. Right as shes pulling her other leg out, it catches on something and she falls and hits the ground with a thud. I wait for her to stand up, but she never does. I lean down over her and start trying to get her up. I realize after a minute or two that one, I'm crying, two, I'm screaming for her, and three, Christina has gotten out of the car and is kneeling down too.
"Nothing's broken, thank God, but she's got a black eye, and is probably scratched up quite a bit. Unless she doesn't wake up soon, nothing to go to the hospital about." I process what she said, then get suddenly angry and stand up.
"What the heck happened? She could've died!" I yell. "Where was her seatbelt? She was on the floor, bleeding!" I feel a few more tears run down my face and quickly wipe them away. Christina sighs and puts a hand o my back, rubbing small circles.
"The seatbelt snapped. I held on to her as long as I could, but she flew out." I breathe out then look at Alexandria. I turn back to Christina.
"I hope she wakes up..."
"Me too, Kath," Christina responds. I hear a crunch from behind me and jump, quickly turning around. I see Alexandria standing there, confused, squinting her eyes in the sunlight.
"What-" she begins, but I rush over to her and tackle her in a hug. She stumbles back, then regains balance and wraps her arms around me. We stay like that for about 3 minutes or so, until I realize we are both crying. I pull away and grab her face gently to examine it, but she still winces. She's covered in cuts from the glass, some worse than others.
There is dried blood all over her, but it's really bad on her face, around her nose. I guess her nose started bleeding. She also has a lot near her hairline and under her right eye, and I quickly discover why. She has one semi-bad cut along her hairline, easily fixed. But under her eye, there's a huge cut. It's even still bleeding. It won't require stitches but will hurt like heck for awhile. Her left eye is also swollen and bruised pretty badly.
"It's not... that bad," I say to her once I've backed up. She just sighs and shakes her head. I let Christina hug her and examine, then we all sit down. After discussing what to do, we decide to call Amy because we know for a fact she has no plans today. Christina stands up and walks away to call Amy, while I stand up and go to help Alexandria. As she stands up and moves around, I can see her limping and trying to subtly hold her side. I walk over to her and put my hand on her arm to stop her form pacing.
"Lift up your shirt," I say. Maybe more like command. She stares at me in shock, then shakes her head.
"No," She says.
"Alexandria... Please?"
"No!" She crosses her arms over her stomach in a protective way. I then realize what this is about and walk over to her.
"I'm not gonna judge you because of your stomach. I promise." She reluctantly uncrosses her arms and holds up her shirt. I can tell she's sucking in a lot, but I leave it be for now. Her ribcage is badly bruised and she has this one cut right next to her bellybutton. That one's gonna scar. I put my hand on it to see if anything is broken, and she flinches in pain, then relaxes again. Nothing's broken so far.
As I move to the left side, I notice more cuts, but in a more uniform pattern. they also don't look as fresh, maybe a day or two old. I can also see tens, maybe hundreds, of scars going up and down from under her shorts, to beyond her bra where I can't see. A sinking feeling fills my stomach like someone dropped a weight into my stomach. I make a note to ask her about it later, then stand back up.
"Nothing broken, just a lot of bruising and cuts." She kind of winces at the word cut, but that could've been just my imagination. Christina walks over, off the phone with Amy.
"Amy will be here in about 10 to 15 minutes." We nod, then I walk closer to her.
"Chrissy, can we talk in private?" She nods and we walk out of earshot of but where we can still see Alexandria.
"What's up?"
"I-I saw a bunch of cuts on Alexandria's side. But not like glass cuts, they were too uniform. A straight line all the way from under her shorts to under her bra. There were also hund-" I break off, choking up, "hundreds of scars." I start crying and Christina wraps her arms around me. And even though she is quite a few inches shorter than me, it's comforting. I calm down and we pull away.
"I'll ask her about it later, okay?"
"I was going to as well, so let's just ask together." Christina nods at my suggestion and opens her mouth, but right then we hear a panicked Amy come barreling out from behind the wreckage of the car.
"Oh my God! Are you guys okay! What happened! This is awful! What happened to Alexandria? Why are you guys barely scratched but she looks like she was beaten up? Is there-"
"Amy! Calm down!" Chris has to yell to make her voice heard over Amy's.
"Sorry," Amy says, significantly quieter, "So what happened?" We're all silent for a moment, but then Alexandria steps forward.
"You might wanna sit for this, Ames." Amy nods and sits on a tree stump, and the rest of us follow suite, but on the ground.
"So here's the tea..." Alexandria begins.
