I sat on the floor with Daniel and I's daughter, putting a Disney princess puzzle together.
Our daughter is five now and lately she has been missing Daniel a lot. I mean, tour just ended and as soon as he got back to America, he went straight to the studio.
Seriously. We haven't seen him once today.
Him and the boys have constantly been in the studio. Don't get me wrong, I am incredibly proud of him and part of the reason I love him is because of how hardworking he is, but I miss him. We miss him.
I watched as my daughter put another piece of the puzzle into place. She was smart for her age, really. At least I was around to see her learn new things and grow.
Suddenly, she dropped the puzzle piece and looked up at me.
"Do you really think Daddy will play with me when he gets home tonight?" she asked, a look of hope in her eyes.
"I'm sure he will. Why do you ask?"
"Well, you tell me that he will play with me when he comes home every day, but...he never does. He just goes to bed."
"Yeah, I know, sweetheart. I know it's hard not getting to spend time with Daddy, but he works really hard and it tires him out. He'll make time for you, though. I promise. You're his daughter, he loves you."
She smiled and continued putting the pieces together.
I silently prayed that he would play with her tonight.
She's so smart that it's easy for her to figure out that he is in a bad mood.
Which, I totally understand because I know he has really long days at work, but she's still his daughter. He can't just ignore her.
I saw headlights shining through the window and I slightly smiled, happy to know that he was home.
"Daddy's home," I notified, causing my daughter to shoot up from the floor and run to the door.
She stood on her tippy toes and unlocked the door and pulled it open, revealing a grumpy looking Daniel.
"Daddy, you're finally home!" she cheered, jumping up and down.
"Hey, sweetheart, how was your day?" he asked, throwing his keys down on the coffee table and heading into the kitchen, our daughter running after him.
"It was okay. Mommy and I went grocery shopping and then we got frozen yogurt and then we started putting that puzzle together."
"Oh, that's great, sweetheart," he mumbled, furiously typing on his phone.
I frowned and watched as our daughter's smiled faded.
"Really? Then what did I just say?" she asked, looking up at him with teary eyes.
He looked down at her, surprised.
"You said that you and mommy got frozen yogurt," he said, finally putting his phone down.
"And? There's more."
"Uh...I'm sorry, sweetheart. I'm listening now, tell me again," he smiled, squatting down to her level.
"Nevermind. I'm just gonna go to my room because you probably won't play with me anyways."
She walked back out to the living room and gave me a tight hug.
"Sorry about the puzzle, mommy. I don't really wanna finish it anymore," she said.
With that, she scampered up the stairs to her room.
I heard the door shut and I quietly made my way upstairs to hear faint cries coming from her room.
I shook my head before quickly making my way back downstairs to see a guilty looking Daniel.
"I'm sorry, honey...I...I didn't know she cared that much about telling me a story about frozen yogurt," he said, confused.
"This isn't about fucking frozen yogurt, Daniel! She misses you. Every single day that poor little girl asks me if Daddy will play with her when he gets home. And every single day, I tell her you will. She stopped believing that today, though. She questioned it. Y'know why? Because every night when you get home, you pull shit like this!" I yelled, keeping my voice low, though, not wanting our daughter to hear this.
"I'm sorry. I just...get tired," he shrugged.
"So do I, Daniel. So do I. I clean this house, cook for us, work every single fucking day, just like you. I work too, Daniel. And on top of all that, I'm taking care of our daughter, by myself!"
"I'm sorry, okay! I wish I could be here more, but you know what my job is like!"
"I understand that you're busy and that you are literally flying across the whole world, but...when you're not it a different country, would it kill you to muster up a little bit of energy and just play with our daughter or take her out for a couple hours?"
"I...you're right. You're always right. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, I feel like such an asshole," he said, shaking his head and rubbing his eyes.
He let out a sigh and looked at me, a guilty look on his face.
I pulled him forward into a hug, rubbing his back.
"I'm taking off the rest of this week and this family is going to spend every second together." he said, kissing my shoulder.
I smiled, happy that I would get to spend time with him.
"I feel like a terrible father," he whispered.
"You are not a terrible father. At all. You're a great father, Daniel, you just have to make a little more time."
"This Dad thing is harder than I expected."
I nodded, but then leaned up and kissed his cheek, him relaxing in my arms.
"Welcome to fatherhood," I smiled.
He sighed and then made his way upstairs to our daughter's room.
I stood outside, watching as he slowly opened the door and walked over to her bed, where she was laying face down.
He softly sat down next to her and placed a hand on her back, causing her to look up for a second before rolling away from him.
"Can we talk?" he asked.
"About what?"
"About what happened."
She rolled over and stared at him, looking unamused.
"I'm sorry. Seriously, I'm really sorry. I know that I haven't really been around lately and I know that you and mommy miss me and I still ignored you guys. I didn't mean to, though. You and your mother are the two most important people in my life."
She just stared at him, a few tears falling down her cheeks.
"I love you, I hope you know that. I'm taking off work for the rest of this week and you, me, and mommy are gonna spend every second of this week together."
As soon as those words left his mouth, she climbed into his lap and cuddled into his chest.
I walked in and sat down, Daniel pulling me into him.
There we sat, one happy family.
Something we would be till death do us apart.
