I stared out the window of the diner, watching the rain fall. I love watching rain, it's peaceful. My peace was broken by something hitting me in the face.
I looked down to see a french fry sitting in front me and my best friend, Daniel, cracking up like a french fry hitting me was the funniest thing he has ever seen. Clearly, he was the one who threw it.
"Hilarious, Daniel, you really are."
I picked up the fry and tossed it back over to him. He caught it and ate it, unsurprisingly.
He smiled at me, but his smile quickly faded.
"What? What's wrong?" I asked.
He pointed behind me, towards the door. I slowly turned around, immediately spotting what he saw.
His ex-girlfriend.
They broke up about a month ago, but he's still not completely over it.
The first week that they broke up, he had practically moved in with me. He was constantly at my apartment, just needing someone to be there for him.
I never liked her, but I kept my mouth shut. She was posessive and self absorbed, but I knew Daniel really liked her, so I just let them go.
"Just, put your hood up and look down," I said.
"Too late, she already looked at me," he said, sadly.
"Well...um...just...um," I stuttered, not knowing what to say.
"Just pretend to be my date," he said.
"No, Daniel, I can't ju-"
"Please. Just do this one thing for me. Please."
I sighed and nodded, knowing I was going to regret this. I've loved Daniel since the day I met him, so to pretending to be his date is not going t be easy.
He reached across the table and grabbed my hand, rubbing the back of my hand with his thumb. He just stared right into my eyes and smiled, causing my heart to melt.
I watched as his ex sat down at the table right next to ours. I felt Daniel's grip on my hand tighten.
I could see her staring at us out of my peripheral vision. Without a second thought, I pushed myself up and leaned across the table, pressing my lips to Daniel's.
I could tell he was shocked at first, but he quickly started kissing back.
When I pulled back he shook his head and pulled me back into another kiss. I smiled into the kiss, savoring the moment I had been waiting forever for.
When we separated for the second time, a huge smile broke out on both our faces.
"Do we have to pretend? Because I would kind of like to be your for real date," I said.
"I would also kind of like you to be my for real date," he smiled.
And so it was settled. We went out on a for real date, which led to a lifetime of memories and love.
