Zach and I have always been close, since we were little kids. We are so close that we show up at each other's houses without warning because neither of us care what he other is doing.
One time, I came home to my apartment to see Zach, laying on my couch with a bowl of raman and watching a Netflix movie.
Another time, I was at his house, taking a shower, and he came home. He didn't even question who was in his bathroom because he already knew it was me.
Today was a typical day. I was bored, so I decided to head over to Zach's for something to do.
He always seemed to be doing something interesting, so I knew I could count on him to cure my boredom.
When I pulled up to his house, I cringed as I saw his girlfriend through the window.
Zach found this girl at a house party. She seemed nice at first, but my dislike for her kept growing more and more.
She just didn't match Zach's energy. He was always up for fun and he's always happy and energetic and spontaneous. Zach is always down to do something outrageous and most importantly, he's always just being himself. He never does anything for the sole purpose of pleasing others.
She isn't like that though. She doesn't really have a defined personality, she just does what the media says she should do.
From what I can tell, that's really hurting Zach. Sometimes when he comes over, he's all sad because she won't do something or go somewhere with him because she's too good for that. It always upsets him, but he just forces the emotions away and continues on treating her like royalty.
I grabbed my phone and the two drinks I picked up from Starbucks for Zach and I, then headed up to his front door and into his house.
As soon as I entered, I knew it was a really bad time.
Zach and his girlfriend were in a heated argument.
"It was literally one time, like you had to expect it," she whined.
"I..." Zach trailed off, his eyes locking with mine.
"Emma, hey," he smiled, looking relieved to see me.
"Hey, I'm your girlfriend and we're having a fight. Attention on me," she said, arms crossed.
"Okay, well this fight is stupid. You cheated and you admitted to it. What do you expect from me?" Zach asked, throwing his arms out to the side.
As soon as I heard the word cheat, my blood was boiling. I didn't realize that I was gripping Zach's coffee so hard that the cup was starting to break.
"Woah, easy tiger," Zach said, walking to me and prying my hand off the coffee.
"Once again, you're paying attention to her and not me. You get all pissed off a me for cheating one fucking time, but you probably cheat on me everyday with her!" His girlfriend yelled.
"Do not bring her into this, she has nothing to do with it. None of this would have ever happened if you wouldn't have fucked some random guy from a club!" Zach yelled back.
"Screw you, Zach! And screw your little side hoe too!"
"Ok, y'know what? Pack your shit and go! Get the fuck out of my sight!" Zach raged.
He didn't have to tell her twice because in what felt like three seconds, she had all of her shit together and was shoving it out the front door and into her car.
She took her last bag out and slammed the front door, hard, behind her.
Then all was silent.
I watched her pull out of the driveway and speed down the road.
Zach was seated on his couch, slowly spinning his rings around his fingers.
If I know anything about Zach, it's that he hates showing emotion.
I made my way over to the couch and sat next to him, placing my hand on his shoulder and rubbing it comfortingly.
"I can't believe her! She never wants to do anything with me, then she cheats, then she starts saying shit about you, which is not okay at all! I don't know what I was thinking. Y'know, I don't even miss her. I didn't even really like her. I'm not upset about this at all," he rambled.
"Zach, don't say that. Yes, you did like her. Yes, you are upset, you just broke up, you have a reason to be upset," I said.
"No, Emma, I'm fine. I-I'm not upset."
I continued to rub his back, knowing that any second the waterworks would start.
I've only seen Zach cry twice in my whole life.
One time when we were ten years old because I accidently gave him a compound fracture when we were playing soccer in his yard and one time when we were 13 because he had his wisdom teeth out and the anesthesia made him go crazy.
Zach hates crying because he hates vulnerability, but sometimes you just have to let it all out.
One tear fell and he wiped it away instantly, probably hoping that I didn't see.
"You know, Zach, it's okay to cry," I whispered, which made him lose control.
He turned towards me and buried his face in my neck, starting to sob.
"It's okay, let it all out," I soothed, running my fingers through his fluffy hair.
"I...I just thought that she really liked me, but she was just a mean girl!'
"I know, Z, I know. You'll find the right girl someday, I promise."
A few minutes had passed before he finally started to calm down, but he kept his head resting on my shoulder.
"You okay?" I asked, pulling back so that I could see his face.
He slightly nodded, staring up at me with glassy eyes.
Without any warning out all, he leaned up and connected his lips with mine, kissing me softly.
I thought that he was kissing me because he was upset about the breakup and he was just caught up in the moment, but little did I know, in the future, our relationship would be so much more than just one simple kiss.
