My front door opening caused me to jump, scream, and throw my pen and papers across the room.
When I looked up, I wasn't surprised with who was standing there.
It was none other than my boyfriend, Zach.
"God, Zach, I told you not to scare me like that," I sighed, picking up the sheets of paper scattered around the room.
"I'm sorry, baby, but look."
Zach emerged fully into the room, a small yorkshire terrier sleeping peacefully against his chest.
I mentally cooed, but I knew that neither Zach nor I had time to care for a puppy.
"Zach, where the hell did you get that?" I asked, arms crossed.
"She was all alone in a box right outside the market. I couldn't just leave her, she could die," he explained, glancing down at the puppy.
"Well, you're a sweetheart and that puppy is adorable, but we should get her to an adoption center," I said, picking my car keys up and shoving my feet into my shoes.
"Wait, what?" he asked.
"Zach, we can keep it."
"Why not? She needs a home."
"Neither of us have time for that right now. You're leaving for tour in a month and I'm constantly balls deep in work. We just don't have the time" I explained.
His face fell and he looked like someone had just stolen his baby.
"I'll take care of her, I promise, you won't have to do a thing. Just please, let me keep her."
"No, Zach. It isn't up for debate."
I was standing my ground with this one. I love Zach and I want him to be happy, but this is out of the picture.
"But...but this coul-"
"No, Zach. C'mon, let's take her to the adoption center."
I walked out the door and to the car without a second thought.
Zach eventually sauntered out the door and sat down in the car, holding the puppy close to his chest.
I drove us down to the nearest adoption center, dreading what was next.
An unhappy Zach.
I parked the car and looked over at Zach, who was still clutching the now awake puppy.
The puppy licked his nose and he smiled the brightest, yet saddest smile.
"I'm sorry I have to give you away. I hope someone else can take good care of you," he said to the puppy, as if it had a clue that he was talking to it.
Zach looked up at me with a frown and glassy eyes, making my heart ache.
"Zach, baby, why do you even want that puppy so much?"
"Well, I just...I um... it's stupid, but I thought that maybe...I don't know. Having a puppy together would almost be like having a kid together. Which is something that I've always dreamed of," he explained.
My heart skipped a beat as I finally understood his intentions. He's never really mentioned starting a family before, but I feel like it has always been in the back of both of our minds.
"Zach..." I trailed off, watching the way he coddled the puppy almost like it really was a kid.
The puppy was resting its head on his chest and he planted soft kisses on its head.
"Baby, why didn't you tell me all this earlier?" I asked.
"You said it wasn't up for debate."
"I'm sorry baby. I should have let you explain."
"No, it's okay."
I sighed, weighing my options.
"Alright, fine, we can keep the puppy!" I gave in, watching his mood instantly change
"Really? Are you serious, we can keep her?"
"Yes, Zach, we can keep her."
He carefully set the puppy on his lap before leaning over the center console and hugging me as tight as he possibly could.
"Thank you so much baby! Oh my god, we have a puppy together!" he yelled, excited.
"Yes, we do. Now, let's go to the pet store."
At least I didn't have to deal with a grumpy Zach.
