His crimson eyes met mine and my stomach lurched. I looked away as All Might spoke again. "All team members must make it up to the top of the building and touch the flag before the stopwatch is paused to determine your time. The rest of us will be observing through cameras that are wired throughout the building. Any questions?"
A few of my classmates asked questions but I could barely pay attention as I avoided the heat of Bakugo's stare. I suddenly felt light headed as the empty pit in my stomach seemed to grow. Before I had a chance to fully process the situation, most of my class was walking away, leaving Bakugo, Todoroki, Shoji and I standing in front of the building.
"Okay, we have to work together if we're going to -" Todoroki started, but Bakugo was already blasting the front door of the building down.
"Fuck off, Icy Hot, I don't need help from any of you weaklings!" he shouted, walking ahead of our group.
"Bakugo!" Shoji yelled. "Todoroki's right, we have to work as a team and be smart about this! We should come up with a strategy before just barging in."
However, Bakugo was already running into the building full force. Closely behind him was Todoroki, followed by Shoji. I stood there for a moment, dumbfounded. Why am I processing things so slowly? I thought, as I started running forward to catch up. I heard the explosions before I saw them as I entered the building. Bakugo had already unleashed a few blasts to combat some of Ectoplasm's clones. I watched as the clones erupted into clouds of thick, fluffy smoke.
He makes it look so easy. I thought, although I was worried about how my quirk would work on the clones. Will it even work?
"We have to find stairs!" I heard Todoroki's voice above the chaos of Bakugo's explosions.
"Don't tell me what to do, you half and half bastard!" Bakugo screeched, continuing to forge ahead.
As I continued to trail my teammates, a clone suddenly appeared directly in front of me and before I had time to block, stuck me in the shoulder, sending me toppling to the ground. I screamed out at the force of the hit, which continued to sting as I got to my feet.
"Nakano!" I heard Shoji yell.
My thoughts were scattered and I blanked on what emotion I should try to project on Ectoplasm. Fear. As the thought hit me I projected fear but his face didn't change. His face didn't even appear to be human. The slants of his white eyes didn't waver and his teeth stretched out across his face reminded me of a skull with no lips or flesh covering them. I was suddenly hit with an overwhelming sense of inadequacy as the clone charged me, completely unfazed by my quirk.
His leg sliced through the air and I was able to block the kick but the strength of the hit caused me to stumble back, nearly falling to the ground again.
Shit. I thought, suddenly feeling completely overwhelmed and frantic. His clone is so much stronger that me. Even without my quirk I don't know that I stand a chance.
The clone was continuing to advance and I felt frozen as he approached, my heart pounding in my ears. Why aren't you moving?! I thought angrily. Suddenly a wave of ice consumed the clone and I was hit with a rush of cold air that made my hair billow out behind me and then settle down on my shoulders in wild tangles. The air sparkled for a moment as a sudden calmness settled around me.
"Are you okay?" Todoroki asked, stepping out from behind the now frozen clone.
"Y-yeah," I stuttered, although in reality I was not okay and feeling quite light headed.
"Clearly she's okay, you damn bastard!" Bakugo butted in, charging forward, his eyes filled with irritation. "Now let's fucking move!"
"I agree that we should keep moving, but let me lead and I'll use my quirk to sense if there are any clones on the next few levels," Shoji said. "We've only fought a handful here on the first floor but he may be spacing it out so that there are a certain amount on each floor and possibly even more as we make it higher."
"I don't take orders from you, octo-arms!" Bakugo yelled. "I'll lead!"
"My quirk..." I said, ignoring Bakugo. "I don't think it works on them." I avoided eye contact, feeling ashamed at my lack of worth in this team of my powerful classmates.
"Of course it doesn't," Bakugo sneered at me. "Because it's a stupid quirk."
"Bakugo!" Todoroki snapped. "That's enough. You're acting childish. Shoji, you lead us and keep an ear out for any upcoming clones. Nakano, stay close to me and I'll make sure to protect you."
Bakugo's eyes immediately became clouded with rage. Shoji had nodded once and was already running ahead. Todoroki looked at me briefly and nodded in that direction.
"Let's go," he said and started moving.
"Right," I replied and began running after him.
I heard Bakugo roar in anger from behind me before using blasts from his hands to propel himself forward. The explosive heat washed over the right side of my body as he passed me to fall into a run slightly ahead of Todoroki. He looked back at Todoroki, the look in his eyes wild and manic, about to scream something when Shoji yelled out from the front of the group.
"I found the stairs! And I'm not hearing anything in the staircase, so we should be -"
Bakugo had blasted the door to the stairs already and shouldered past Shoji to get into the staircase. "You can all go to hell!" he shouted over his shoulder.
"Bakugo!" Shoji called out to his team mate as multiple clones appeared on the staircase and the one in front of Bakugo lashed out. Bakugo reacted quickly and dodged the attack before blasting the clone with a powerful explosion, causing it to evaporate. Shoji and Bakugo pressed up the staircase together, both using the strength of their quirks to eliminate clones.
As I began making my way up the staircase my vision started to blur and a static haze began seeping into my vision. What the hell is happening to me? I thought and stopped for a minute to catch my breath. As soon as I stopped I felt a sharp and immediate pain as I was struck on the side of my head by an enemy from behind. My foot instinctively tried to step back but was met with nothing but air and I felt myself falling backwards. A cry escaped my lips and a thought flashed through my mind that I might die here when I felt a warm hand grip mine. My body swung to the side, a crack sounding as my back smacked against the cold, hard wall of the staircase. My eyes were screwed shut and I heard ice forming as a cold breeze washed over me. When I opened my eyes, I looked over to see an Ectoplasm clone trapped in a prison of ice. Looking up the stairs I was met with those charcoal and icy blue eyes looking down at me. It felt like the temperature had dropped significantly and a shiver ran through my body but I noticed that my hand continued to feel warm and secure. Looking down, I saw that Todoroki's hand was in mine, keeping me from falling down the stairs.
"Are you okay?" His voice was soft and soothing and I found myself nodding as I righted myself on the stairs, taking a few more steps before my vision began to blur again but this time was fading into blackness. I was vaguely aware of his hand still in mine as I fell forward into the darkness.
