Bakugo's POV

I couldn't seem to keep my eyes off of her. Even as I stood in line at the food stand, my eyes kept drifting over to the stretch of beach where she was lying down on her towel, an arm casually draped over her eyes to serve as a shield from the unrelenting sun. Her long legs were stretched out, one of her feet tapping at the air to an imaginary rhythm. I smiled involuntarily at the sight until I caught some douche wagon dragging his filthy eyes across her body as he walked past and I nearly charged him, but a voice snapped me back to reality before I could.

"Yo, your hand is smoking!"

I turned to glare at the cashier, a dopey looking boy who was staring at my clenched fist and the tunnel of smoke that floated up before being whisked away by a soft breeze. I could visibly see him gulp before speaking again.

"What can I get for ya?" He attempted a smile but it looked more like a grimace.

"2 shaved ice," I stared at the list of flavors, realizing that I hadn't asked Y/n what flavor she wanted. "Let me get cherry and blue raspberry."

It seemed safe enough of a bet that she would like one of the popular flavors, but still I felt an odd sensation of nervousness take over after I paid and began walking back with the two plastic containers brimming with the brightly colored ice. She seemed oblivious to my presence even after I came to stand a few feet away so I took a seat on the towel next to her and gently pressed the cool plastic up against her side. She immediately startled, a hand flying down and nearly knocking the shaved ice out of my hand but I dodged her quickly, just barely saving the sweet treat from its demise.

"Katsuki," She whined, pressing her hands to her face before shifting her fingers to peek out and look at me.

She was fucking adorable. If my hands weren't full they would have been on her in an instant.

"You didn't tell me what flavor you wanted, dummy. So your choices are red or blue."

At this, she sat up quickly, assessing the shaved ice carefully. "How very Matrix of you."

"Huh?"

"The Matrix. Ya know, will you choose the red pill or the blue pill. When Morpheous offers it -" She must have noticed the look of utter confusion on my face because she suddenly flashed me a look of disbelief. "The Matrix. Have you seriously not seen the Matrix?!"

"No, it sounds stupid!" I said. "Now will you take whichever one you want already, it's starting to melt and this shit is getting all over me!"

I hadn't realized until I sat down that the colored ice was started to melt down the side of its container and a bright red stream of cool liquid was beginning to run down the length of my arm. Narrowing her eyes at me, she took me by surprise when her hand came to rest over mine and she yanked my arm up, sticking her tongue out and running it along the red trail, sending a shiver up my spine before pulling away and snatching the container out of my hand.

"I'll take the red pill," She muttered before shoveling a pile of the dark red ice into her mouth.

I could feel my mouth hanging open. It took me a moment to recover and I was just about to respond when I heard someone snicker and I looked to find the douche wagon standing nearby with what appeared to be a few of his lackeys.

"I'd like to see what else that tongue can do,"

I saw red. Nothing but a deep, burning red that consumed my vision. And then her voice broke through the fog.

"And I'd like to see you eat shit and die."

I looked to see her lips twisted into a sneer as she looked in the direction of the piece of shit who had made the comment. There was a fierce determination in her shining green eyes, the sort of bright light that I had become accustomed to shining through during our training together despite her repeated losses. I watched as the boy's face contorted with anger as he took a step towards us. He opened his mouth to speak but he quickly froze as though an invisible force had stopped him. His expression shifted from anger to confusion and then I noticed the shine in his dark grey eyes.

"You gonna cry about it?" She said, her voice dripping with venomous sarcasm. She pouted her lips and tilted her head slightly as she continued to stare at him.

He narrowed his eyes at her before whipping around. "Let's go," He muttered to his buddies, who shot us a bewildered look before following after him like lost puppies.

"Apparently I've taken to your wording," She said after they'd left, casually spooning another mouthful of the shaved ice between her lips. "Eat shit and die? Ha! I never would have said that before. My choice wording would have been 'fuck off' or something to that extent. Anyways, I'm making you watch the Matrix. It's a non-negotiable. I'm disappointed in you, honestly."

I stared at her. This girl, this wild, unmanageable, emotional roller coaster of a girl, who always kept me on my toes, was without a doubt the most beautifully chaotic storm I had ever come across. And I fucking loved her.

"Really, nothing?" She said after a few beats of silence. "No, 'Idiot, I'm not gonna watch that stupid movie with you,' or, 'Fuck off, like I care if you're disappointed!'" Her lips were already stained a deep red and her spoon hovered a few inches in front of her mouth as she stared at me waiting for a response.

"Nah," I said finally. "I'll watch any movie you want, idiot, as long as it's with you."

This took her by surprise and I watched in amusement as her cheeks became tinted with a pinkish hue and she suddenly became overly focused on finishing the rest of her shaved ice.

"I'd like that," She said quietly after she finished, setting the plastic container aside before pulling her knees in to her chest. "You going to eat yours?"

"I'd rather not have my entire mouth stained blue and look like a moron. Oi, shitty hair!" I shouted, holding up the shaved ice like a bright blue beacon. "Want this shit?"

Before he could make a move, it was snatched out of my hand as Kaminari whizzed by, a frisbee in hand and the frozen treat now solidly planted in his other. "Thanks, Bakubro! We'll share it!"

Irritation prickled my skin where his hand had collided with mine and I was about to yell at him when I felt her hand cover my own, immediately washing away the sensation of anger. I looked over to find that she had laid her head down in the crook of her arm and her eyes were closed. I took the opportunity to admire her for a moment but after a few seconds she opened her eyes.

"Thanks...for everything today. I've loved every moment of being here. It really meant the world to me that you were willing to do this even though I know you're not a fan of hanging out with the class."

It's true, I hadn't really wanted to do the whole beach day thing even though I had suggested it without thinking it through. But if I was being honest with myself, I was having fun and I was loving spending time with Y/n. The usual angry background noise running through my mind since I'd been captured by the villains had been significantly quieted today and I knew that she had played a big part in that.

"I'm pretty tired out though, so I'm thinking maybe we can head back soon?"

I nodded and she gave me a soft smile and squeezed my hand before sitting up and riffling through her bag.

"I haven't even checked my phone since we left, but I should probably..."

She trailed off as she pulled her phone out of her bag, her expression shifting as her eyebrows scrunched together, her eyes scanning the phone as she started clicking and scrolling.

"What the hell...my mom...called me a bunch of times..."

She lifted the phone to her ear, the confusion written on her face slowly shifting as she listened to the voicemail. I could hear the shrill murmur of her mom's voice and although I couldn't make out what she was saying the desperate tone that I detected left a hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach. Y/n's hand, which was now resting on the ground, began to grip at the sand beneath her fingertips and I watched the color slowly drain from her face.

As the voicemail ended, she slowly lowered the phone down and her fearful eyes seemed to look right through me as she said, "My father. Nobody can find him. He's gone missing."
