There was a strange buzzing noise that was beginning to irritate me coming from my bedside table. Cracking one eye open, I peeked at my phone screen and immediately shot up in bed as the word Bakugo flashed across the screen.
What the hell? Why is he calling me? What time is it? My thoughts, generally confused and jumbled questions, bounced around my mind as I frantically tried to figure out why he might be calling.
The phone stopped buzzing and his name was replaced by the time: 6:18 AM.
What. The. Hell.
Yesterday Shinso had walked me home and once I had gotten here, I figured the best way to prepare for my upcoming finals was to get a good nights rest. Especially with how much pain I had been in, it wouldn't have done me any good to study anyways. I had gotten a few texts from Bakugo but had chose not to open them before lying down.
Now, I went into my texts and opened them, starting at the beginning.
Bakugo: What the hell, you idiot!!! We weren't going to train today for this exact reason! Now you're going to be in pain for the next 24 hours and you're going to fucking fail your exams! What were you thinking???
Bakugo: So you're ignoring me now??? Whatever, fuck you then. Fail your exams for all I care.
Bakugo: GODDAMMIT can you at least let me know you made it home okay you fucking invalid?!
The room seemed to spin as I tried to process his texts. So aggressive and yet...
The phone rang again and I stared at it for a moment before swiping to accept the call. I slowly lifted it to my ear before saying, "Uh...hello?"
"About fuckin time! I'll be at your house in like 15 minutes. Be ready."
My heart started pounding. "Wha -?!" I started saying but he had already hung up.
I threw my covers off of me, the force of it startling Kiko, who had been curled up at the foot of the bed. She cried in protest as I leaped out of bed, grabbing my dresser to steady myself as a fresh wave of pain washed over me. However, it passed as quickly as it hit and I began to get dressed as my thoughts raced uncontrollably.
Why is he coming here? What the hell is going on? Is he just coming here to yell at me? No, that doesn't make sense, he would have just done that on the phone.
I quickly styled my hair in a half up half down fashion, which was my go-to for test taking. Usually I didn't wear make-up but something compelled me to put on some mascara quickly before racing to the bathroom to brush my teeth. Checking the time every few minutes, I found myself ready to go and standing at the door 15 minutes later.
Stepping outside, the fresh air was a welcome distraction to my heightened anxiety about what was to come. Through a cluster of trees to my right, I saw a flash of spiky blonde hair and my pulse quickened if that was even possible. I swiftly walked towards my front gate and when I stepped out onto the sidewalk I froze.
"Hey," He mumbled, and held out a large, dark, iced beverage. In his other hand he held a coffee, it's steam billowing out and disappearing into the air.
"Is this..?" I couldn't comprehend what was happening. As I wrapped my hand around the drink, our fingers touched briefly and I felt electricity rocket through my fingers and up my arm. He pulled away quickly as though he felt it too.
"It's your usual order, a large cold press, right?" There was a bite to his tone, as though he was defensive, but there was also the slightest flash of vulnerability in his eyes as if he was doubting himself.
"Yeah, but -"
"Okay, hurry up then," He cut me off, walking ahead.
It was as though my confusion was taking the form of cement blocks weighing me down. He took a few steps before turning around, a look of irritation on his face.
"Did your legs stop working again or what?" He asked impatiently.
I took a hesitant step forward, speaking softly as I continued to attempt to process this situation. "I just don't understand why you're doing this. Yesterday, you were so mean to me. And now..."
Trailing off, I looked into his crimson eyes, which were back to being sharp and guarded. He narrowed his eyes and scowled at me. "Forget about yesterday, you need to focus on getting through the finals now. And I'm going to make sure you pass. So start moving your ass so we can get to school and get a good breakfast in us before the written exams start!"
So he's doing all this because...he wants me to pass my finals?
"O-okay," I muttered and started walking alongside him.
We didn't speak for a while and I relished the taste of the strong coffee and the sounds of the birds greeting the morning. Eventually he broke the silence and when he did his voice was unexpectedly gentle. "Are you feeling okay?"
I looked over at him and his face was relaxed, his gaze focused down at the cup of coffee in his hands. Seeing him like this, so calm, made my heart seem to tighten and I looked away before I got caught staring.
"There's the usual aches and pains, nothing I haven't gotten used to by now. But it's not as bad as it was last night, so it's taking it's normal course. To be honest," I felt a wild excitement run through my body and I wasn't sure if it was the cold press hitting me, or something else, something deeper and more permanent. "I'm feeling really good right now."
He spoke softly in response, the words being carried away by the breeze as quickly as they exited his lips. "I'm glad."
