Chapter Twenty-Eight

Emma didn't respond to a single message from Suho and he eventually gave up and accepted her sudden decision, before leaving home the girl kept her ring in the black box and put it inside her desk drawer. With her backpack on her shoulder, the girl left home and went to college. When she got there she ran away from Anneliese and Rhea and went to Mason, who greeted her with a kiss but was not returned.

She sat next to Mason without any excitement or motivation, she looked like a doll next to him and he was all happy to announce to his friends that they had gotten back together again. On their way to the bar, Anneliese and Rhea noticed their friend next to Mason but she was lost in thought and didn't notice them. Looking at her wristwatch, Emma gets up ready to go to class and run away from there but is stopped by Mason who pulled her pointing with his finger at her cheek. Emma rolled her eyes and kissed his cheek and left.

As she entered the pavilion, Emma ran into her friends who were staring at her with their arms crossed with an upset expression. She didn't even try to run, she just waited for Anneliese to start talking.

"What the fuck Emma? I didn't believe Kai when he called me but it's true isn't it? Are you back with that piece of trash?" Anneliese starts hoping her friend would deny it.

"I am." Emma replies. Anneliese looks shocked at Rhea and starts laughing ironically not wanting to believe it anyway.

"He cheated on you!" She yells, stopping laughing. "I was the shoulder you cried on! I freaking punched him for you! I always got your back and now you break up with Suho to be with Mason? I'm sorry, but I can't accept that." She reminds Emma. Emma felt her chest squeeze as the conversation went on, she wanted to explain and ask for help, but it had everything to go wrong.

"You don't have to. You just have to respect my decision." Emma sighs, looking away at the ground. Anneliese shakes her head.

"I don't. And I won't. Not this time."

"I will not discuss this with you Anneliese. I'm with Mason now, and that's how I'm gonna stay." The girl answers and leaves her friends walking to her classroom.

Anneliese was so upset by the attitude and contempt that Emma was giving to that situation and everything she had done for her that she eventually left the pavilion and went to sit in the bar. Rhea was sitting in the chair in front with her laptop open to finish her part of the project she had with Emma and Emma had already sent her part. The girl was sitting with her headphones in her ears while Anneliese shook her leg on the floor, frustrated, stressed and completely moved by her anger. The girl's cell phone started ringing, she peeked in to see who it was and answered the call.

"Hey babe, how are things?" Kai asks as soon as Anneliese answers the call.

"Hey. Worst than I expected." Anneliese replies, still shaking her leg on the ground and watching Rhea working.

"What do you mean?"

"Emma's with Mason." She reavels.

"She's what?" Kai asks to confirm what he heard.

"You heard it. I saw them together." Anneliese says, crossing her legs and sighs deeply.

"Has she lost her mind? He cheated on her."

"I punched him for her!" She raises her voice and looks around watching the students look at her, she lowers her voice and apologizes. "When I confronted her, she just gave me the cold shoulder."

"That doesn't sound like her." Kai points out. Anneliese shakes her head in agreement.

"Something's wrong, she's hiding something. We need to keep this whole thing a secret, we can't tell Suho." Anneliese says as she remembers how Emma and Mason were in the morning when she passed them. Emma seemed weird.

"I won't tell him. It would break him even more. Try to find out what's going on and don't get hurt."

"I'll try. I wish you were here, I got too used to have you and now I don't anymore. I don't even have Emma anymore either." The blonde says in a sadder tone.

"I'd like to be there too, love, I promise I'll be back soon."

The rest of the day went normally. Boring classes and that's all, the only difference is that now Anneliese and Rhea were alone while Emma was with Mason. Anneliese always looked at her friend and rolled her eyes when she saw Mason approaching the girl to kiss or hug her but noticed that Emma never reciprocated or was clearly uncomfortable; the blonde eventually let it go and went home with her friend.

Already at home Emma was in her room doing another assignment and studying for a test she was going to have the next week when she hears her father screaming downstairs. The girl gets up from her desk chair and goes downstairs watching her father walk around and sees Mason at the door; as soon as her father notices her, he comes up to her screaming.

"What's he doing here?!" Her father asks, pointing to Mason who only smiles.

"We're back together. It's okay, dad." Emma replies approaching Mason and grabbing his wrist.

"What about the other boy? Suho?" He asks confused.

"He was just a friend."

"Get him out of my face then." Her father ordered.

The girl shook her head and pulled Mason into her room by closing the door. Mason sits on her bed and starts laughing. Emma looks at him and crosses her arms.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

"What do you mean? I always came here to hang out with you." Mason makes himself unnoticed. Emma rolls her eyes.

"You used to came." She corrects him.

"I will start again."

"Do we really have to do this, Mason?" Emma starts as she sits in her chair. "I already broke up with Suho, I'm already pretending to be your girlfriend in college, and now I have to listen to my dad yell because you think everything is fine like it used to be." Mason starts laughing as he shakes his index finger in front of Emma.

"Pretend? There's no pretending. We're dating, babe." Mason correts her. "Suho was just someone you had fun with for a while, I forgive you." He smiles.

"You forgive me? You cheated on me, Mason!" Emma stands up from her chair and looks at him. "And I haven't and I never will forgive you for that."

"We both made mistakes. It's all forgotten. Unless... you want me to press send and your videos will be all over the web." He says as he gets up out of bed and walks towards her. She gives a step back.

"How can you be like this? In a relationship where you're not loved and you have to blackmail me to be with you?"

"Apparently you forgot all the years we've been together. Do I have to remind you?" He asks, sitting on her bed again. She shakes hear head.

"No, Mason. I want you to forget it too and move on." Emma replies. "I'm not happy and you should be able to see that and stop blackmailing me."

"That's not going to happen."

"Why? And what about Bethany?" Emma remembers Bethany who, actually, liked Mason. He laughs.

"Bethany? Please. I just wanted to get laid." He says without the slightest problem, shrugging. Emma bites her lip.

"Right and forget you had a girlfriend. And you didn't answer me." Emma rolls her eyes and waits for a justification.

"Can't compare herself to you. You're way better. The answer is simple, I want you. My family's powerful enough and I always had what I wanted."
