The next morning we all huddled around one of the cars, the weapons Carl found is what we huddled around.
"Everyone takes a weapon." Dad stepped back and let everyone decide.
"These aren't the kind of weapons we need. What about the guns?" Andrea was annoyed and began to blab her mouth again. I started becoming annoyed by her presence.
"We been over that." Shane was putting his backpack on. "Dale, Rick, y/n and I are carrying. Can't have people poppin' off rounds every time the tree ruffles." Shane looked at me, considering thats something I used to do.
"It's not the trees I'm worried about." Andrea looks at me while I fix my hoister.
"Say someone fires at the wrong moment, Herd happens to be passin' by see then it's game over for all of us." Shane speaks and looks Andrea dead in the eye.
"You need to get over it." I pipe up, obviously annoyed. Shane puts an arm around my shoulder and we start walking in the direction of the water truck.
"Let's go get some water before we go." Shane smiles at me and we begin walking. We both already know the drill seeing as we have done this stuff before. I opened up the water container and slowly poured out some water into my bottle. "You must not like her." Shane leaned his back against the truck.
"Nope." I popped the 'p' and bit my lip. I finished filling up my water bottle then filled up Shane's. "She pushes my buttons. All this bullshit about guns. She's got a group and weapons she should be thankful. We saved her damn life." I sighed.
"Calm down there princess." Shane smiled a great big grin as he spoke. Knowing it would annoy me. I chuckled and nodded my head. We both closed the truck and took off with the group. Andrea was right behind Daryl, she was pissed off for no reason. I noticed Carl was walking with mom and smiled. I elbowed Shane and pointed out Carl.
"Look, they let him come with." I giggled a bit as everyone took off with each other. We made our way through a grassy area. Carl fell behind a bit to talk to Shane and I.
"Shane look! Dad said I can carry it, and mom said as long as I was-" Carl began to speak and Shane cut him off a bit.
"Keep your voice down." Shane looked at Carl and then ruffled his hair. "Remember, you have to focus on the task." Mom used her weapon to push Carl along.
"You've got to keep up." Mom glared at me and Shane. I rolled my eyes and ignored it.
"Shane," I mumbled. He looked at me. "That was mean." I bit my lip and looked up at him.
"Yeah, I know." Shane looked ahead at Carl. "I've been thinking, we get out of here." Shane sighed and looked at me.
"What?" I wasn't sure I heard him right. We lagged behind a bit.
"I think things would be better if me and you, just slipped away. Quietly." Shane looked at me and gave a half smile. "Before you say anything, I just want me and you to be alone. I think it would be best. Hell, once Ranger Rick finds out we are screwed. If your mother reacted badly how do you think he's gonna react?" I couldn't help, but smile. He was thinking about us, nothing else. Just us and what we could be.
"Okay." I smiled at Shane. "I will think about it." Shane smiled bright and looked like a child with the look he was giving me. "Excitement needs to-" Shane held his finger up. The group had come to a stop. We looked up and saw a very small camp. I held my hand up to Shane as I circled around everyone to the front next to my dad.
"She could be in there." I suggested as Shane crept up behind me. I snapped my head over towards him when I heard a branch break.
"Could be a whole bunch of things in there." Daryl crept forward with Dad and Me behind him Shane did no sneaking and didn't care much for sneaking either. As we approached the tent Daryl walked around it looking to try and see what was inside, after realizing he couldn't he held his knife up and ready waiting for dads call.
"Carol," Dad waved his hand over towards Carol and she came running. "Call out softly, if she's in there yours is the first voice she should hear."
"Sophia? Sweetie? Are you in there? Sophia, it's mommy. Sophia! We're all here baby it's mommy." Carols voice faded in and out of worry and calm. Dad nodded at Daryl to open up the tent. He held his fun up at anything that could be in there. When they opened the tent everyone around began to cough, naturally Daryl went inside. "Daryl? Daryl what's in there?"
"Ain't her," Daryl swallowed as he spoke.
"What's in there?" Andrea piped up stepping forward.
"Some guy, did what Jenner said. Opted out. Is that we he called it?" Daryl swung his crossbow onto his back again. I sighed in relief. I was thankful Sophia wasn't in there, finding her is the objective. Preferably alive but, dead would also be like stabbing a stake into our hearts. We began to hear church bells ring all around us. Echoing from everywhere. Dad pointed in a direction and we all ran that way, Carl being the youngest was also the slowest. So I scooped him up into my arms and he climbed onto my shoulders. We did this a lot when we were little so, it came naturally to us both. As we ran we came to a small shaded clearing to figure out the noise.
"What direction?" Shane hustled to a nearby tree and caught his breath.
"I think that way, I'm pretty sure." Dad pointed in the same direction we'd already been running.
"It's hard to tell out here." I sighed and wiggles a bit to get Carl in a more comfortable position for me. "If we hear them Sophia might too." I smiled at Carol who smiled at me. Her eyes filled with hope.
"Someone's ringing those bells, maybe calling others." Glenn hustled up with the group.
"Signaling that they found her?" Andrea suggested.
"She could be ringing them herself." Dad hustled down the hill and started running again. "C'mon." Everyone followed his lead. Carl held onto my shoulders tight. He learned to lean backward as I ran forward so I don't fall. We ran for about ten minutes before everyone slowed. We came upon a church, although it had not steeple.
"Can't be it, got no steeple, no bells." Shane pointed out as I thought to myself. I sighed and pulled Carl off my shoulders. "Rick." Dad took off running yet again, Shane and Daryl tracked close behind.
"Stay with the group." I smiled and ruffled Carl's hair before walking next to him as everyone took a faster pace. I watched as dad, Shane, and Daryl all entered the church. I heard only slight commotion and stayed outside with Carl. After the commotion dad came around the side and swung open the door.
"Sophia!" He yelled as loud as he could. I could tell that he was angry, disappointed, and flat out annoyed. Carl and I can inside as we noticed everyone else was. The church was beautiful, just stunning. Even though there was blood practically everywhere it was gorgeous.
"I don't want to go!" I listened as my best friend, Marley, yelled at her dad about going to church. "The Lord hasn't done shit for me!"
"Marley Lilian Andrews! Watch your tone and your language! You are going. That is final." Her dad opened her bedroom door and smiled at me. "Y/n honey, you've got to go home now." He sighed. "Thank you for coming over."
"Of course Mr. Andrews. I'll be out in 5 if that's alright?" He nodded and closed the door Marley looked and me and sighed.
"Guess you have to go home then. Sorry I can't protect you front your parents." She put a hand on my shoulder and gave me a sad look. I shrugged.
"I'll probably call Shane and just go there. No big deal." I smiled, while Marley made an 'oou' sound. She knew I liked him, but only she did. I did exactly as I told her and went to Shane's house. He welcomed me big and warm, big hugs and a large cup of coffee. The usual with him.
