The next few days dragged as the silence continuously filled the house.
It was Christmas Eve and Katy and Cheryl still weren't talking.
Katy hadn't even put a Christmas tree up this year.
Cheryl was sitting on the sofa and Katy walked in and sat beside her.
"It's our first Christmas together and we haven't even got a tree up." Katy said, breaking the weeks of silence.
Cheryl shrugged.
"How long is this gonna carry on?" Katy asked, bravely.
"As long as it does." Cheryl replied, bluntly.
Katy frowned.
"It's been 3 weeks." Katy stated.
"And?" Cheryl said.
"We can't carry on like this." Katy said, taking hold on Cheryl's hand.
Cheryl went to pull away but Katy grasped it tighter.
She looked into Katy's eyes.
"I can't loose you." Katy said.
Cheryl's eyes filled with tears.
Katy's eyes widened.
"What's wrong?" She asked, concerned.
Cheryl shook her head and let a faint smile.
"I'm overwhelmed." She said.
Katy giggled slightly.
"Why?" She asked.
"It's been so long." Cheryl replied, stroking Katy's hand.
Katy looked towards the ground, still smiling.
"I know." She whispered.
Cheryl pulled Katy into a close embrace.
They began to sob in each others arms.
"I've missed you." Katy said, softly.
Cheryl giggled.
"I've been here?" She replied.
"No, you've not. Your presence was here but not you." Katy said.
Cheryl wiped her tears away.
"How about this tree then?" She asked, sniffing and smiling.
Katy's eyes brightened.
She leapt up and towards the cupboard, returning with a 6ft white tree and a bag full of pink tinsel and accessories for it.
Cheryl opened the bag like an excited school girl.
"I love these bows!" She said, holding up 3 pink and silver glittery bows.
Katy smiled.
"Russell never let me have those on the tree." She said.
She saw Cheryl's face drop.
"...but he's not here now and it's just girls, so, we can do what we like!!!" Katy saved.
Cheryl smiled, searching for more tinsel in the bag.
*9pm.*
Cheryl yawned as she rested her head on Katy's shoulder.
"Cheryl?" Katy asked.
"Yeah?" Cheryl replied, sleepily.
"I wish you'd only know how sorry I am." Katy said.
"What's brought this on?" Cheryl said.
"Guilt." Katy said, honestly.
Cheryl snuggled closer to Katy.
"Don't." She said, before yawning again.
Katy continued to watch the TV until she heard Cheryl's slight snores, she carefully lifted her head and placed it on the cushion on the sofa.
She got up and went into the kitchen, returning with the ring she had taken from Cheryl and a silver box.
She placed it in the box, under the tree whilst reaching for a piece of cream and silver card.
She wrote:
'I hope you're still willing to be my wife.'
She placed it under the box and gently tapped Cheryl.
"Let's go to bed, sleepy." Katy said, softly.
She turned to TV off and helped Cheryl arise from the sofa.
When they got to the bedroom, Cheryl collapsed in a warn-out heap on the bed, falling back to sleep almost instantly.
Katy stayed awake for a while, watching her sleep whilst embracing their first night sleeping beside each other in over a month, before drifting to sleep herself.
She was awoken by Cheryl shaking her.
"Wake up!" She said.
Katy squinted.
"What time is it?" She asked.
Cheryl bit her lip.
"7am." She said.
Katy groaned.
Cheryl pouted, jokingly.
"It's Christmas, Katy!" She exclaimed.
Katy sat up, remembering the gift she had left under the tree the previous night.
She smiled.
"Well what are you waiting for then?" She asked.
"ERM, you!?" Cheryl replied.
They laughed.
They got out of bed and got their gowns on before waking downstairs.
When they reached the bottom Cheryl gasped at the sight of the window.
"Snow! It's snowing on Christmas Day!" She exclaimed, excitedly.
Katy smiled.
"Wow." She whispered.
They sat around the tree as Katy passed Cheryl the box and the piece of card.
Cheryl bit her lip.
"What's wrong?" Katy asked.
"I haven't got you anything, I forgot, I just thought-" Cheryl began but was cut off by Katy.
"Don't be silly! Just open it." She said, giggling.
Cheryl opened the box carefully, revealing the familiar ring.
She gasped.
She turned the card over to the side with writing.
She read it as she welled up.
She looked over at Katy, who had hope in her eyes.
"Of course I will." She whispered.
Katy smiled as she pulled her into a tight squeeze.
"New Year's Day. Let's do it." Cheryl said, surely.
Katy looked shocked.
"So soon?" She asked.
"Why not? What have we got to loose. New year, fresh start. What better way to start the year than to marry the person I want to spend many coming years with?" Cheryl explained.
"Okay. New Year's Day it is." Katy said, smiling.
