It was the next morning and the rain was pattering against the window as Katy and Cheryl both lay awake, listening to the rain in silence.

"Beautiful isn't it?" Katy murmured.

"What, the rain?" Cheryl giggled quietly.

"Yes, the soothing sound of it." Katy replied.

"I suppose it is." Cheryl said.

"I remember when we were young and me mam used to take us up the red reck on our bikes in the rain, little Gary always fell first though." She continued, smiling to herself as she reminisced.

"My mom never took us anywhere, rain or shine. Dad did when he wasn't busy gambling or with other women, so mom thought anyway." Katy replied, no quite so cheerily.

"Oh well, I guess some things never change." She finished.

Cheryl rolled over to look at Katy.

"Are you really not worried about her? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong but, your mum's dying." Cheryl said sternly.

"Why would I? She doesn't think of me as her daughter - why would I give her the time of day?" Katy said.

Cheryl raised her eyebrows.

"Katy." She said, almost pleadingly.

Katy shifted.

"You'll regret it if you don't part on good terms." Cheryl explained.

Katy rolled her eyes.

"Says who?" She asked.

"Says me! And you when she's gone and you realise that the last thing you said to her was that you wished she went to hell." Cheryl said, sternly.

She propped herself up on her side and attempted to make eye contact with Katy, although she kept looking away.

"Look, I'm just trying to tell you what you don't seem to realise. I don't want you to make the mistake of letting your mam die without so much as a goodbye." Cheryl said.

Katy pondered.

"I'll call Shannon." She finally gave in.

She turned over and picked up her phone.

*13 missed calls from Shannon.*

She instantly called her.

"Hello?" She said.

"She's gone, Katy." Shannon said, lowering her tone.

"When?" Katy asked.

"This morning, half past 4. It wasn't painful and she-" Shannon started but was cut off by Katy.

"I don't want to hear it." Katy said, bluntly.

"Katy..." Shannon said, but it was too late as Katy put the phone down.

"Well?" Cheryl asked.

"She's gone. My mom is dead." Katy said.

"Oh God, I'm sorry..." Cheryl whispered, reaching over to rub Katy's back.

"It's kind of a relief actually." Katy admitted.

"Don't say that." Cheryl said.

"I wonder if dad will be back anytime soon." Katy said.

"Do you want some toast?" Cheryl said, diverting topic of conversation.

"No thanks." Katy said.

"Okay, anything else?" Cheryl asked.

"I'm good." Katy replied.
