Chapter 35 : Blackmail

A year went by. Kodai was asking a lot about his father. Everything seemed OK, until Killer went to see Lanniya one time. He looked concerned. She was surprised that he found the island, but mostly, that Kid didn't seem to be with him. Something was wrong. She told Kodai to go inside and ran to him. He sat on the ground, panting.

- Where is Kid ? she asked.

- Lanniya... He got caught. He is in Impel Down.

Lanniya couldn't say a thing. They were both scared. She brought him something to drink.

- I told him to not get caught, she muttered.

- He surrendered.

- What ?

- The Marines learnt about you and Kodai. They told him that they would kill you both if he didn't surrender. He was too scared. We managed to escape. I wanted to tell you.

- But how could they know about us ? was the only thing she managed to say.

- I don't know... Maybe your kid talked ?

Lanniya looked at Kodai. He was only four years old. Of course, he could've said something like that and the other children could've said it to their parents and so on... And even without that, there were often Marines in the surroundings. In fact, it was highly possible.

- Oh fuck.

- What do you want to do ?

- Free him. He can't stay in Impel Down.

- Can you even do that ? And what about Kodai ?

- I cannot let the father of my child languish in prison.

- Are you even trained to fight ?

- Do you think that I spent my whole time here sewing bags ? I wanted to come back, I needed to stay fit.

- Lanniya, we are not supposed to let you free Kid.

- What if I just help you ? Don't worry for Kodai, Heat can stay with him and protect him.

It took her some time, but she managed to convince Killer. Heat would stay to protect Kodai. She dressed with her old black clothes and took her scythe and her mask. Before leaving, Lanniya talked to her son to explain him everything.

- Kodai, dad is in danger. We are gonna free him and we'll come back. Heat will protect you. Be a good kid.

- It's because he is the King of the Pirates ?

She smiled sadly.

- Yes. And because he loves you a lot and want to protect you.

- Then I'll learn how to fight to be as powerful as him ! he claimed proudly.

They finally left the island. Killer patted Lanniya's shoulder. He knew that it was hard. She was scared for her child and Kid. He hesitated, but something was on his mind. After all, he should tell you.

- Lanniya, do you know why Kid wanted you so bad in his crew ?

- I didn't think there was even a reason.

- Yeah, I know.

- Why ?

- You know, Hawkins, us and a lot of other supernovas come from North Blue. We met Hawkins when we were starting piracy. You know how he is, always in his cards.

- He always reminded me of the witch in my hometown. She was doing so much odd predictions...

- He did one to Kid. He said that he would be attached to only one woman in his life. When Kid asked him how he would recognise her, Hawkins said that she would not fear him, trust him and never leave him.

- Do you think that...

- I'm not sure. But the first time he saw you, something intrigued him. Maybe he remembered the prophecy.

Lanniya sighed as Killer patted your back again.

- I don't care about what cards have said. I just want to see Kid alive and free again.

After two weeks of journey, they arrived at Impel Down. Killer and Lanniya had a plan to free Kid.

- Ready ? he told her as she was hidden at the bottom of the wall.

- Of course, Lanniya answered while putting your mask on.
