Chapter 37 : The territory

- Is Mom still sleeping ?

Since they had left the island, Kodai didn't stop to ask where Lanniya was. Kid had explained him hundred times, but he didn't understand. Kid was starting to loose it. He did everything he could to make sure that his son was alright, but he didn't forget his mother.

- You should show him Lanniya, said Killer. She is going better after all.

- I think I don't have the choice, sighed Kid. He is stubborn.

- No surprise with the parents he has, joked his friend.

Kid went to Kodai and kneeled in front of him. Kodai immediately stopped his game and listened carefully. His father was like an idol to him and he was doing everything he could to make him proud.

- Kodai, we will see your mother, but she is not in a good shape so you have to stay calm.

- Ay ay, sir, said the young boy seriously.

- You will be a good pirate, Kid said smiling and patting his head.

Lanniya was not asleep. She could now sit but not walk. It was taking time to recover from so much poisoned bullets. The door of her room opened and she saw a little shadow to her bed. Kodai jumped on her knees to hug her.

- Kodai, I told you to be careful ! scolded him Kid.

She stroked the hair of her son. It was good to see him again.

- It's OK, Kid. I missed him too.

Kid sighed and sat on the bed. Lanniya cuddled in his arms as he patted her son's head. She couldn't believe that they were a family now. From her room, she could hear them play together. It was very cute to see how close they were becoming.

The next day, she was going better so you went outside. Kodai was playing alone and Lanniya and Kid watched him.

- I can't believe how close I feel to this young child.

- I thought you didn't like children.

- I know I just... I just want to make his life as good as possible. It's like seeing me when I was a child.

- I was so afraid that you might deny him, she said. I wanted him to have a calm childhood.

- He can't have it with us. You were right.

- What do you want to do ?

- I just conquered some islands somewhere. I thought that I could build a general quarter where you and the little one would live. I also managed to rally some other pirates crews who could protect you.

- That's not a bad idea, she said. But we will miss you.

- I will miss you as well, he answered, holding her hand a little tighter.

- You will come to see us from time to time ?

- As soon as I would be able to, he said kissing her hand.

He looked away and blushed a little bit.

- You know... about what Aokiji said... you know, the marriage and stuff...

- I don't want to get married, she said categorically.

- Lanniya, I want to marry you. It will protect you and it will be better for Kodai. People don't attack you if they know who your husband is. And the Marines won't attack us as much. 

She didn't say a thing. He was not wrong at all.

- OK, but let's keep it simple. I don't want a big ceremony.

- Because you think I will spend a lot of money for an event to make you mine when you already are ?

A couple days later, they found a man who accepted to make the marriage. It was quick and not really sentimental. For the first time, they kissed in front of the crew who was cheering them. Afterwards, they threw a big party. Lanniya learnt that Killer was married to the girl he met when she was still part of the crew. She teased him because he hadn't told her. Kodai fell asleep on Kid's laps who talked proudly all along about his son.

After the wedding, they made their way to Kid's territory. Lanniya had overpassed how much his fame had grown in the last years. She saw that there was a castle and that he had built some houses. It was rather comfortable. Kid and the crew built other houses for the allies for a month approximately. After what, they had to leave.

The goodbyes were horribly sad. Lanniya couldn't let Kid go. He couldn't either. He was holding her so firmly in his arms that she couldn't move. She knew that it was painful to let his new wife and his son away. Their kisses were long and passionate. Kodai was hanging to his leg, crying. It was hard to stay the strong woman she used to be without him. When they finally parted, Kid took Kodai in his arms. He was angry and even hit his father.

- Kodai ! she screamed.

Kid slowly put him on the ground and hugged him. Kodai tried to hit him again but soon gave up. She knew he loved his father and wanted to be close to him. It was heartbreaking.

- Kodai, said Kid softly. I love you. I won't let you down. You need to grow up here, with your mother. She is beautiful and kind and I know she will protect you. I'll come from time to time. When you'll be big enough, you'll come in my crew and we'll be the fiercest pirates on the seas. Can you promise me to be a good boy to be a part of my crew one day ?

The little boy nodded sadly and hugged his father. Lanniya then took him in her arms and he cuddled. He was tired. Kid looked sad as he went on his boat. They waved at her and went away. She was now alone with her son and some men from Kid's allies.
