Ethan placed his hands upon Ben's shoulders and I kissed his forehead. "Alright Ben, I'll be home not long after midnight alright?" I say. He nods and runs into the house with Kelly's hand in his. I sigh and look up at Ethan. He rolls his big eyes.
"He'll be fine! He's with me for Christ's sake!" Ethan says throwing his arms in the air.
"I know it's just that..." I say and trail off. Today was that party Riley invited me to. I wanted to go I really did. But too many times have I thought of calling him and saying "Hey sorry I can't go to that party you invited me to even though I totally like you and think your hot because my psychopathic mom is at home with my dead beat father and god knows what they'll do if I'm not home they can lose any bit of sanity they have at all in a split second and the universe can burst into flames meanwhile i'm partying" I take in a deep breath. Sure it sounds ridiculous but its realistic.
Ethan shakes his head and wraps his arms around me. "Stop worrying. Marcus doesn't know where he is. They think you're at a friends house with him. They'll never know. Ben is safe me" he says I shut my eyes and melt in his embrace. he's right but it doesn't help.
"I know it's just that if eh found out and anything ever happened to you I'd be thrown into some jail/asylum because I would have lost it and killed him" I say and he laughs. He pulls away and pushes the dripping curls from my face. I was a dressed as a masquerade princess. The theme is masks. No one can know who you are. When I told Ethan and Patty the theme they laughed. Patty said "You're not gonna pull a 'A Cinderella Story' on us are you? Because I think Hilary Duff beat you to it" and then Ethan said "Imagine he shows up as Prince Charming" which I had to admit I did laugh at that. I just felt so guilty leaving Ben somewhere without me even if it was Ethan and Kelly's house. I should be here with him instead of having a grand old time. Not like anyone cares for me anyway I surely won't be missed.
"You need to live a little. Go have fun. Be a Teenager emphasis on the Teen part Tess!" he says and we're laughing. He shakes his head a bit.
"Oh Tess if you only knew" he says and I frown at him.
"Knew what?" I ask.
"How much that kid loves you. All he does is talk about you. Tess this, Tess that. Ben worships you. But the one thing he never leaves out is how he feels like you aren't normal because of him" he says and my eyes widen.
"That's not true how could he say that!" I say and he cuts me off.
"He always talks about how you never do anything for you. He always talks about how he wants you to have fun the way he does when he's with his friends" he says and I fall silent.
"Tess you do everything for Ben. Ben wants you to do this. he wants you to have fun" he says and I begin to bite my lip and I can taste the red lipstick then quickly stop. I smirk a bit.
"Well if you insist" I say and he bursts into laughter.
"That's me little evil and conniving Tess. Now go have fun!" he says and turns me around smacking behind sending a jolt through my body and the desire to run a thousand miles. All I need was a push in my beautiful outfit make up and mask.
"Go have fun Princess!" he calls out and waves. I look back and smile.
"I'll do more than have fun!" I say and he raises an eyebrow
"Whoa, ho, ho Tess" eh says and nods in approval. "You go girl" he says and I laugh.
The lace on my dress surprisingly didn't itch and be either did the places with the sparkles. Good thing I put so many Bobbie Pins in my hair or else my bun with curls would come pouring down. I hadn't wanted to wait at my house or Ethan's so I chose a neutral ground to meet Riley. In front of the school.
His car pulled up and he came out. I smiled. I knew it.
He opens up his arms to the side of him and smiles too.
"Well?" he asks and turns once. "What do you think?" he asks and I laugh.
"You make a very dashing prince" I say and he bows.
"You make a stunning princess" he says and his voice is so cheesy I laugh then curtsy. He takes his mask off and throw sit into the back seat.
He takes in a deep breath and opens his mouth to speak but shuts it and finally his eyes meet mine.
"What's wrong?" I ask and he shakes his head.
"Nothing, you look great" he says and extends his hand. I take it and he smiles.
"I would tell you what I'm thinking but I'm afraid you might hit me with your bag" he says.
"You better not be thinking I'll play Damsel in Distress. Because if anything that'll be your role" I say. He laughs and opens the car door. "Come on tell me! I want to know!" I say with a chuckle. His face falls serious and the fall air whisks through his hair.
"How about this" he says in a deep scratchy whisper. I tense everywhere when he brushes his thumb across my cheek. "I'll tell you when it happens"

The music I could hear from all the way down the hill. The white lights from the water fountain shone so bright they might be mistaken for stars in the distance. The large iron cast gates opened and Riley began to drive in. i began to nod in approval.
"Nice" I say and he breathes in.
"Yup, the homes of those in high society" he says and looks at me. He holds my gaze for a moment before I look away and try not to smile.
I love the sound of a car door when it slams shut. I look up at the home and Riley places his hand on the small of my back. "Don't be intimidated trust me" he says and I let out a laugh.
"It's very hard to intimidate me" I say and he smiles.
"Oh I know" he says and we walk past the large wooden doors. People with beautiful masks were walking by. The music was so loud the sound began ringing in your ears. Everyone was either screaming for joy laughing or mingling. The Elite of St. Ignatius Private High School were there. Everyone with politicians, doctors, scientists, lawyers, company CEO's and owners for parents. We walked out to the back where although it was icy cold out like shards piercing your skin people where in the bank talking by the pool that was glowing in different colors and the sky was lit up with hanging lights. With all the density here and so many bodies and heavy costumes together it wasn't in reality all that hot. As for me I was freezing. I felt so cold I could hear my jaw clattering. This outfit, as gorgeous as it was when I bought it on Austin Street, wasn't the warmest thing to be wearing on an autumn night. I was glad to know that I didn't stand out. Some girls were angels, Victorian vampires, stunning witches but they all had masks. The best part was they had no idea who I was and I had no idea who they were.
Someone bumps into me hard and I look over. A girl dressed as in red with big brown eyes big beautiful white teeth a wide smile and long thick straight brown hair gasped. "I am so sorry!" she says and I look at her to smile.
"No, it's fine. I wasn't paying attention" I say and she smiles.
"Beautiful costume" she says and walks away. I couldn't help but feel all warm and tingly inside. She hadn't scolded me or gave me the look of death like anyone else would have. Instead she just smiled complimented apologized and went on her way. Instead of making me feel like an outsider she made me feel like anything but. She made me feel like I belonged here with everyone else my age because I was normal.
"Come on" Riley said and guided me through the dense crowd. In the corner three men were standing talking and laughing and Riley approached them. Toby stands among the group with a pirate outfit on him and the boy to his left I recognized as Zayn from algebra dressed as a vampire and to his right Jackson, Jack for short, from biology.
"Hey guys" Riley says and with their bright smile they look at him. Zayn whistles. "Whoa!" Jack says and slides off his stool.
He points to me with his thumb and looks at Toby.
Toby laughs "Who's the babe Riley? Your date?" he asks.
Riley rolls his eyes "Hahaha" he says sarcastically and stifle a laugh.
"This is Tess, from Mr. Stevens class" he says. All of their eyes grow so wide and even Zayn clumsily falls off his stool.
"No way, we talked about how cute she was but I never knew she looked that good" Jack says and Riley squeezes my wrist. He might think I feel uncomfortable. I don't. I actually feel like one of them. Normal.
"Take off the mask sweetheart let's get a good look of you" Toby says. They weren't hostile or nasty or mean or total perverts. Actually really sweet in a goofy guy kind of way. So that's why when I pulled off my mask I didn't mind when they stared at me in awe.
"Wow" Zayn says and Toby nods then looks to Riley the feather in has hat moving. "That's a keeper" he says nodding and Riley takes in a loud deep breath.
"Ok Tess, how about we go?" he says turning me by my shoulders. "Let's go dance' he says and looks at them. He raises an eyebrow. "I'll see you later" he says and guides me towards the dance floor.
Finally when we're alone and a slow song starts he lets out a deep breath. "I am so sorry about that" he says and I laugh slipping my mask back on. I shrug.
"It's alright I don't mind. They actually really know how to make a girl feel welcome" i say and he smiles.
"Well in that case i'm glad you were entertained by their stupidity" he says. I laugh as we begin to sway to the rhythm of the music. When I was younger she shipped me off to etiquette summer camp every year for 7 years. Every since I was 8. They were awful but taught me a lot. Now dancing to this slow song I feel a lot better. The light twinkled and hit the glitter on my dress which reflected in his big eyes. They were big and emerald green. Just emerald green. I had never taken out the time to fully examine his eye color. To me before they were just every color of the rainbow. Now I knew what they were. pure emerald green. Or like a crayon green. Covered in long thick jet black eyelashes. His hair was thick, straight, brown like mine, and beautifully styled and about an inch in length. His skin was a sun kissed color like when the summer first begins and you show the first signs of tanning. That beautiful color that's still light but bright with character. I was also very jealous of him. he had the most gorgeous bone structure I had ever seen before in my entire life. Square jaw line, beautiful cheek bones, beautiful nose, big, big eyes, even his eyebrows were beautiful. I mean why can't I be that pretty. Yet he was so masculine which just made me hate him even more. One day i'll tell him to stop being to damn perfect. It's annoying.
"You alright?" he asks and I snap out of my daze. I was examining the rest of the features on his face. Flawless skin, and big beautiful full lips. I thought for a moment. Now I'm really going to tell him to stop being s damn perfect.
"I'm fine" I say and he smiles a bit.
"You were way too quiet" he says and I giggle a bit.
"Sorry, I didn't know you wanted me to talk" I say and he shrugs his shoulders.
"I don't mind" he says. The song grows closer to the end when very carefully slowly and softly the wind blows and he brings his mouth down on mine. The song stops and he doesn't let go of me. He pulls apart for what I feel is all too son and presses his forehead to mine. he smiles to himself with shut eyes.
"I have to tell you something" he says.
"What?" I ask. I'm slowly dying inside. That was beautiful.
"What I was thinking when I picked you up earlier. I was thinking about how much i wanted to kiss you. Especially with how beautiful you look in that dress" he says and laughs "I did say I would tell you when it happened" he says and I laugh too.

The rest of the night felt as if it had just flow by. It was the most wonderful night of my life. Everyone was talking with me. Everyone was laughing with me. I was apart of every conversation not the topic of them. Riley was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe. Toby was just shaking his head at him while Zayn and Jack laughed too. Clary in her angel costume huge bloody red wild curly hair and turquoise eyes was laughing so hard her eyes were ready to come out and Jeanine in her witch costume was laughing so hard she crying. I laughed and slowly began to calm down. There were loud shouts and hoots. It had become so cold out for me I had a thick blanket around me and it still wasn't enough but I didn't mind. I looked over and a bunch of guys came in wearing hockey uniforms. They looked like loud wild untamed animals when they came in. Everyone stopped laughing and instantly frowned. Then there was a group of girls behind them, all in which seriously needed to put some more clothes on, with sourish happy faces on. They looked like ditzes. Plastic ditzes.
The head was a bleach blonde with white skin and a bunny outfit on. She had sharp eyebrows and was face model pretty. She had high black boots on with a long thin heel and her foot was popped. She was scanning the place with vicious blue eyes.
I looked at them. "What's wrong?" I ask and they don't answer me. Just meet my eyes and look over again. The hockey jerks hoot and jump into the pool.
"Ahh!" I shriek and turn away trying not to get wet. I feel drops of water but that's about it. Riley removes his arms from around me and looks at them.
"What the hell is wrong with them?" he asks and Toby let's out an annoyed sigh.
He jumps off his pedestal. "I guess its time to kick some people out of my house" he says and raises an eyebrow. Riley shakes his head.
"No, its alright. We'll just go inside. It's cold out anyway" he says and looks at me in his prince charming outfit. "Sorry" he says and I laugh a little.
I shake my head "It's alright" I say and we go back inside. We stop by the fire place and he looks around.
"I'll be right back. "Don't move from here alright?" he says and I nod not objecting.
I look around and wait for a few minutes. Surprisingly the place becomes far too packed and I manage to catch a glimpse at the clock. It was 3. Far too late and I had to get home. Well, Ethan's anyway. I began to wiggle my way through the crowd. and try to find Riley. Instead of the warm happy bubbly full of life environment there was before there were hockey jocks in the mix that against my own will made me feel uncomfortable walking around dressed as a princess. I find myself in what looks like a huge dinning room. In the corner I see that shinning prince costume. I've finally found Riley.
I open my mouth to say his name but the sound doesn't come. I know that girl. She was the one in the bunny costume. Her name was Brittney. God, I hated her. I think I hate her even more now. She had her arms wrapped around his neck and she was laughing with his hands around her waste. He looked to the side and had an odd look on his face when he let her go. She began to run her fingers through his hair and they were speaking. She rubbed his chest and flashed a smile. He said something and she laughs. her sharp eyes meet mine for a moment and my cheeks burn red. She looks away then back at him. She pulls him down and practically swallows his face with her mouth kissing him fiercely. Everyone around her laughs and runs her hand down his back and through his hair. How can anyone kiss another person with that much fire? At first he seemed shocked and he placed his hand on the small of her back. Finally he pushes away and she laughs at him then kisses his cheek softly. She looks over and someone collides with me. I fall to my knees and the bottom of my dress is torn and stained with what looks like wine with the shards of wine bottles stuck at the ends. I look up and a hockey jock had a box of wine bottles in his hands. When he bumped into me with so much force and pour I fell to my knees and so did the bottles ruining my flawless whimsical dress. He shrugs. "How's gonna take me to buy more!' he shouts and walks away.
I hear Brittney laughing and look up.
"That's for bringing that joke babe. She really made the party funnier then expected. You were so right" she says and he looks at her. I don't see his face but I can only him from behind. she grazes his ear with her lips then kisses him again. I yank the blanket off of me and pulls myself up. Riley turns around. She has his arms around his shoulder and she's laughing. He looks angry, lost and confused when he looks over. His eyes find mine and they widen. I don't wait to hear what he says when he opens his mouth I just run out the door into the cold.
******************************************************
It was so cold out that I could see white where the air from my mouth came out. i looked around and rubbed my arms. i ran down the path way and pushed myself out of the gates and looked back for a moment. My back was around my wrist thankfully as I hadn't taken it off once. I looked at my dress and wanted to cry and sob. I shook the skirt and the shards of glass came off. "Tess!" I heard someone shout and I looked up. I saw Riley and I ignored him. I picked up my skirt as it had become so torn it dragged and I continued on my way. I heard the gates open and the tears burned my eyes. What a fool I was I should have known. I was just a joke in their eyes. They were probably nice because they knew they'd get a good laugh out of me.
Riley's car begins to pull up next to me and I keep looking forward. The window comes down and he sticks his head out.
"Tess!" He says.
"I'm ignoring you!" I say and trip over a strip of dress that was torn by the glass shards on when he stepped on me dress.
"Tess please it wasn't what it looked like" he says and I look down.
"You don't have to explain yourself to me" I say and keep walking. He lets out a grunt and pulls the car over. The door flies open then slams shut as I hear his foot stops running to catch up to me. He walks backwards in front of me with wide eyes.
"No, I want to explain myself to you" he says and I stop for a moment. I shake my head.
"Well I don't care. I'm no one special or important that you need to explain yourself to. I'm not your girlfriend am I?" I say and he lets out a deep breath.
"No" he says and holds my arms. "I like you. So I'm going to explain myself to you" he says and the tears are threatening to come pouring down. i'd rather a bet down with Marcus's belt. it would hurt a lot less than this. He shakes his head as if at a loss for words. He brings his hand up to the side of my face and i fiercely look away but he still makes it his business to push a curl back. The grip on my mask in my hand tightens.
"I-" he says and I shake out of his grip.
"I don't want to hear it" I say and push past him.
"Tess!" he says and runs to catch up to me.
"At least let me take you home. Its cold out" he says and my jaw tenses.
"I'd rather freeze thanks" I say and keep walking. "Oh an do me a favor" I say turn to look at him. "Don't ever talk to me again. Don't even look at me. I want nothing to do with you" I say my voice so hard and cracked it hurts. We comes closer to him and I remember something. "By the way" I say and he looks at me and his eyes flicker. I stomp hard on the ground "Stop being so damn perfect!" I grunt through a tightly shut jaw and run off into the night not looking back. I feel like my heart has broken and crumbled to pieces within my chest.
*************************************************************
I quietly tip toe into Ethan's house. I sniffle because on the way here I sobbed and tried my best not to cry because you never know who is roaming the night. I hear a door open and a yawn then the lights in the kitchen come on. Ethan, in the white shirt i bought him for his birthday that read 'Sleep like a boss' and the pajama pants Patty got him to match, came in like a restless zombie rubbing his eyes.
"Tess?" he says squinting. I nod smile softly and run the back of my hand across my face.
"Ya, it just me. Got to be Ethan" I say and drop the keys he gave me on the counter.
"Have you been crying?" He asks walking over and the tears begin to threaten rushing down all over again. I shake my head with a sob.
"Ethan I'm fine" I say and he takes my arm.
"No, what's wrong did something happen?" he asks and I let the tears pour down without breaking. I nod softly. He sighs.
"Oh Tess" he says and embraces me. I bury my face in his shoulder and he smells like downy.
"It was awful!" I mope and runs his hand over my hair.
"Its alright" he says and I let myself whimper and sob the way I never have before.
"It was the worst moment of my life. I would rather take a beating then relive that again" I say and he just listens to me when I pour my heart out. What an awful night. An evil night indeed.
