i am about to rant for a second so if you just want the story skip to the non bolded stuff but i suggest reading it, not many people vibe with the big kid scout stories as i do but i had this idea as i was writing an essay about what makes me the most emotional and i am not a very emotional person but band brings out a vulnerable part of my self so in the story there are little nods to important moments in  my oboe journey

"Mom, Dad, I have a proposition." Scout said as he sat down at the kitchens island.

"That doesn't sound good." Link laughed as he sipped his coffee.

"Scout if this is about getting a frog we already have too many reptiles in this house." Amelia said assuming he wanted to ask for a frog that he had been asking for, for weeks.

"No this isn't about that, and by the way mom a frog is an amphibian not a reptile and technically we don't have an amphibian." Scout charmingly smiled at his mother getting off task.

"Ha, ok Scout what were you going to ask." Link chuckled.

"Well as you know I'm going into the fifth grade. And then the following year sixth, which is middle school. And in middle school you can join band. So my plan is to start playing an instrument now, so when middle school rolls around I already have a head start." Scout smiled proud of the plan he had made.

"Well I don't see a problem with this. I didn't realize how competitive you are." His mother giggled.

"Band is a big commitment bud, you sure you want to do this?" Link questioned, he didn't know a whole lot about music outside of guitars so this was going to be new territory for him.

"Yep! I'm sure I have thought through everything." Scout said proudly.

"What instrument are you thinking about playing?" Amelia asked stirring sugar into coffee.

"Well, maybe not everything." The trio erupted into laughter over the overdetermined boy.

"I think you'd be a mean sax player." Link commented.

"I could see you with a trumpet." Amelia added, she was excited for her son to join the band. It was a good commitment and would make him responsible.

"I'm really not sure, I guess I know when I know. Can we go to a music store today?" The eager boy asked.

"I gotta work today, I'm sure your mom can take you." Link said getting up and transferring his coffee to a to go mug.

"Yeah buddy, we can go." Amelia sweetly smiled excited to do something with her son since he favored his father even if he wouldn't admit it.

"Great!" Scout exclaimed.

"Hey how can I help today?" A Non-enthusiastic teenager asked.

"Well, were just looking at instruments. My son isn't quite sure what he wants." Amelia responded to the worker.

"Well, we have some different types of guitars over here the worker said walking behind the desk.

"Oh I was kind of looking for a woodwind instrument I'm planning on doing band." Scout replied, and to this the worker perked up.

"Oh yeah of course, are you going into middle school?" The worker asked leading them to the other side of the store.

"Not yet, I want to get a head start though."

"Nice, always strive to be over prepared. That will get you far in band." The worker commented.
