Dadbert's pov-

"There in good hands, Ellen." I said to the Social Services lady. "I'm sure they will be." Ellen looked at the two teens. "Alright, you two. It's time to go with Mr. Egbert." The boy, John, stood behind Ellen like a scared child, while the girl, Jade ran up to me and wrapped her arms around me in a hug. "C'mon John! Its okay!" He shook his head. Jade walked back to John and grabbed his hand. "Mr. Egbert is nice. Look. He won't hurt us. He wants to take care of us." John stared at the ground for a few seconds before looking at me. He nodded slightly. "Yeee!!!" Jade pulled John toward me. He stared at me in discomfort for a few seconds before smiling slightly. He wrapped his arms around me awkwardly. "See you Ellen. Thank you so much." She nodded at me. "You're welcome. Good day Joseph." Ellen waved at us, before getting into her car and driving off.

"This is your room Jade and next door is John's room. This door connects to a bathroom which connects to both rooms. There is also a bathroom across the hallway and my room is at the end of the hall." John sat on the bed and pulled his knees up to his chest. "Can I talk to you Jade?" I asked her as I walked out into the hallway. "Sure thing." She closed the door behind her. "What's wrong?" Jade asked. "Did John have a hard time with your mother's death?" I asked bluntly. "Uh-huh. He hasn't been the same since. He's scared of getting hurt and being left alone again. He also hasn't spoken since it happened." I nodded. "I see." She smiled at me. "Don't worry. If he acts uncomfortable around you it isn't your fault." I smiled. "Thanks Jade. You guys make yourselves at home. I have to make some phone calls."

~Time skip~

Its been six months since John and Jade got here. And things have turned around for the twins. John has finally opened up more. He's talking a whole lot more and he's started calling me dad. Its like we are finally a family.

"Dad, I'm home!" John called as he walked through the kitchen. "Welcome home kidd-o. How was school ?" He pulled himself up onto the small island. He grabbed an apple from the basket behind him. "It was great! We had a new student join our class. Her name is Vriska. She's from this small country in South America. And we got to go look for bugs outside for Science class." I smiled at him. "Sounds like an eventful day." I pushed the cake that I was baking into the oven. "So, Where's your sister?" He sighed. "She stayed after for club meetings. She wanted to know about all the clubs." I nodded. "Why didn't you stay?" He took a bite of the apple. "Eh, there really wasn't a club that I wanted to join. They just didn't interest me." I shrugged slightly. I opened my mouth to say something when I heard a small bing sound. John pulled his phone out of his pocket. "Oh sorry Dad. That's Dave. He needs help with math." He jumped of the island. "I'll help you with dinner when I get done, okay?" He left the kitchen, typing away on his phone. "Alright." I smiled. Man, I love that kid. I love both my children.
