-Shinso POV-

As you walk through the front door of your home, your cat, Eraser, runs up and greets you by rubbing against your legs. "Hey, bud," you reply as you bend down and scratch his ears.

You shut the door behind you and remove your shoes. "Anyone home?" you call out.

"In the kitchen!" you hear your mom shout from down the hall.

You drop your backpack and head to the kitchen with Eraser right at your heels. On your way, you pass by a large painting of a lake that hung on the wall. You've loved that painting ever since your uncle brought it into your home ten years ago. It was so detailed that you could just imagine yourself right there on the lake, surrounded by the ducks and fish... Just letting the warm sunlight shine on your skin while you closed your eyes and let the fresh air fill your lungs.

"Hey, honey. How was your first day?" your mom greets you as you walk in. She has her lavender-colored hair tied up in a messy bun, and she's pulling what looks like a tray of pastries out of the oven. They smell like warm blueberries.

"It was alright. I stopped by class 1A this morning to say hi to Uncle Shota, but he wasn't there." You skipped the part where you were run into by some jackass, knowing full well that your mother would file a bullying report with the school or something.

She shrugged her shoulders. "Eh... That brother of mine was probably scheming up some way to jump scare his students with his sleeping bag again."

You let out a snort at that. You admired your uncle to no end, but you always thought that sleeping bag of his was just ridiculous. Every time you saw him in it, you pictured a yellow caterpillar with eyebags, and you couldn't help but laugh.

"Yeah, probably." You noticed that she was dressed as though she was going out. "You going somewhere?"

"Oh, yeah! I'm going out to catch up with Mitsuki tonight. Do you want me to tell Katsuki that you said hello?"

"No, thanks." Your mom had been trying to get you and Bakugo to be friends since you were small children, but your personalities just never meshed well. He was always so sure of himself and hot-headed while you were much more quiet and reserved.

She shrugged her shoulders. "You can't blame me for trying..."

"Where's Dad?"

"He's at the hospital... Another late shift."

"Oh." Your shoulders drooped a little. You loved your dad, but he's been taking up too many night shifts, lately. You knew that he could handle it because of his 'No Sleep' quirk, but that doesn't mean you weren't still concerned about his health. He still needed time to rest, just like everyone else.

"Dinner's in the microwave if you're hungry" your mother says with a smile. She sets the pastries on a cooling rack and proceeds to pull out a plastic food container from one of the cabinets.

"Thanks, Mom" you respond as you open it to reveal a plate with meat and steamed vegetables. You take the plate and sit at the dinner table adjacent to the kitchen. You begin eating and your mind starts to wander.

You remembered the girl with the H/c and violet hair. She had such a warm and inviting smile. Part of you wanted to see that smile again... But the rest of you knew that she would never truly want to be friends with you. You gave up on trying to make friends when you were in middle school. No matter how close you became with someone, as soon as you told them about your quirk, they would gradually become more and more distant from you. You knew that they were afraid... Afraid of what you might do to them. But the truth is, you would never use your quirk to purposefully harm someone, especially not someone that you considered a 'friend.'

You watch as your mom finishes loading the pastries into the container. She was the only other person you knew who truly understood how you felt. You got your brainwashing quirk from her, only her quirk works slightly differently. While yours worked by getting your target to respond to one of your questions, hers worked by simply making physical contact with someone.

When you got old enough and eventually opened up to her about how you felt about your quirk, she looked as though she might cry. She revealed to you that she had always hated her quirk, and that she was devastated when you began revealing brainwashing abilities. She also knew that your quirk could potentially make you wanted by villains, and she promised that she would do whatever she could to help and protect you. In return, she made you promise that you would be wary about anyone who wanted to be close with you.

It was an easy task, considering the fact that no one wanted to be friends with a brainwasher in the first place, but L/n was different. Almost as soon as you had mentioned your quirk to the class, she showed an interest in you. To be honest, the whole situation made you very uneasy. No one has ever wanted to be friends with you after finding out about your brainwashing abilities... No one. She said that she'd never met someone else with a psychological manipulation quirk, but that had to have been a lie, right? What about her parents? Surely she wasn't the only one in her family with a quirk like that. Even if she wasn't lying, you were certain that she didn't mean what she said about having 'more in common than you might think.' Her quirk was amazing... Being able to practically transport someone into another world? How could something like that possibly compare to a quirk like yours? There was no way the two of you had anything in common.

"All right Hitoshi, I'm heading out. Feed Eraser for me tonight, will you?"

"Sure. Have fun."

"Thanks, honey. I love you!"

"Love you, too."

You sat there as you heard the front door open and close, signaling that your mom had left. After finishing your food, you put your plate in the sink and grabbed your backpack before heading upstairs. Once in your room, you went to remove your school uniform and put on some more comfortable clothes. Before doing so, you reached into your pants pocket and pulled out the crumpled-up note that the girl gave you. You opened it up and took a look at it one more time before wadding it up into a ball and tossing it in the trash can by your desk.

"Time to study."

I wanted to take a moment to introduce you to Mrs. Shinso! I saw this amazing fanart with a description of what his mother would be like on the internet, and I wanted to integrate it into the story somehow. The artist is @keiidakamya on Twitter. We will also see Mr. Shinso later on in the story.
