-Y/n POV-

You yawned as you entered the school building. Since you had spent a couple of hours at the hospital visiting your mom the day prior, you ended up working on your homework late into the night. "Seriously, who the hell assigns that much homework on the first day??" You tried to get rid of your eyebags that morning, but nothing seemed to work, so you just decided to suck it up and go to school looking like a zombie.

You made your way to 1C and took your seat behind Togeike. You had started talking to each other at lunch the day before, and discovered that you had a lot in common. Mrs. Nomura hadn't arrived yet, so you two took the opportunity to chat.

"So why do you look like shit?" she casually asks.

"Oh, thanks... I had an errand to run yesterday afternoon, and ended up coming home a little bit later than I should have. Nomura's homework assignments are going to kick my ass this year, I just know it."

"Hm... Are you sure you didn't stay up late on purpose so you could look like lover-boy over there?" she asks as she points toward Shinso, who had just taken his seat at the front of the room.

"WHAT? No! And what the hell makes you say that?? He doesn't even wanna talk to me. Besides, I don't like him like that."

"Oh, please... You remember my quirk? I can sense your admiration every time you look at him... You're totally into him."

"Am not!!"

"Are, too."

"Dammit... I'm not into him, am I? No, I'm not... We've hardly even spoken to each other. I bet he doesn't even remember my name. He didn't text me last night either, so either he lost my number, or he just doesn't want to talk to me." Your shoulders drooped a little at that thought. The one time you meet someone who might understand you, they end up not wanting anything to do with you.

"Maybe he's just shy?"

-------------------------------

As the first half of the day dragged on, Togeike's words echoed in your mind. "I can't be into someone I've just met. She's wrong, I don't like him. I just want to get to know him more, that's all. Friends... I just want to be friends."

By the time lunchtime rolled around, you were mentally drained. "How am I going to transfer into the hero course if I can't even keep up with the basic shit? I'm doomed..."

When the bell rang for lunch, a bunch of the other students from your class tried to get you to eat lunch with them, but you told them that you weren't feeling well and just wanted to eat alone. It wasn't hard to pull off, considering your dreadful appearance, so everyone bought it. Togeike snuck away with you so that you could eat somewhere more secluded. Out of everyone in the class who wanted to be your 'friend', she was the only one that you felt could really connect with you.

You both found a spot outside beneath some sakura trees, and enjoyed eating your lunch together. You discussed your schoolwork as well as your hobbies, and found out that she played the drums, and that she loved spicy food. You loved hearing that she was a musician... You were a rockin' guitarist, but were too modest to admit that to anyone. She also insisted that you call her Chikuchi, but only as long as she could call you Y/n. Having lived in America for the past five years, you had no problem with this. The more you found out about her, the gladder you were that you chose her to be your friend. If only Shinso were as open as she was...

Speaking of the devil, the violet-haired boy happened to walk by at that very moment. You watched him as he passed the both of you, and of course Chikuchi noticed. "Well...?" she said as soon as he was out of earshot.

You looked at her, confused. "Well, what?"

"Go talk to him!"

"I already told you, he doesn't want to talk to me!"

"You'll never know for sure if you don't try."

She had a point there. "... Fine. Wait here."

"Sure thing."

You got up and raced after the boy until you caught up to him in one of the halls near the cafeteria. "Shinso!"

He stopped in his tracks and turned to face you. "What do you want?"

"Geez, cold much?"

"I... I just wanted to talk. How've you been?"

"Where's the rest of your friends?"

"Huh? What friends?"

"Your little gang... posse... followers... whatever you want to call them. Aren't they missing their leader?"

"... What the hell are you talking about?"

"Forget it. Just leave me alone."

He turned and walked away from you. "What the actual fuck is his problem?" You wanted to go after him and give him a piece of your mind, but something told you not to. "He's probably dealing with his own shit right now. If he doesn't want to talk, that's fine. I can't force him to be my friend, anyway."

You hung your head in defeat and turned to walk in the opposite direction. As you retreated, you failed to see Shinso stop for a moment and look back to see if you were following him. To his surprise, you were not, and he watched as you rounded the corner and left his sight before he continued on his way.

-------------------------------

Shinso avoided you for the rest of the day, and when the school day came to a close, he left the classroom before you could even finish packing your backpack. You tried to catch up with him, but by the time you got to the hallway, he was gone.

"Still no luck, huh?" Chikuchi came up from behind you.

"No." You couldn't help the disappointed look that crossed your features, and your friend took note of that.

"... Give me your phone," she suddenly demanded.

"What? Why?"

"I'm gonna give you my number, dummy. That way, we can talk about anything if you ever needed to... Or you can ask me questions about the homework, since I know you didn't pay attention for shit in class today."

You pulled out your phone and unlocked it before handing it to her. You watched as she typed her name and number into your contacts. Then, she switched to the camera app and took a selfie of herself flipping off the camera, along with her natural resting bitch face.

"What'd you take that picture for??"

"It's just to motivate you to want to take better pictures with me in the future. Until then, you're stuck with this." She turns the phone around to show you the crude selfie that she took. Sure enough, it was the picture that she added to her contact information.

She handed the phone back to you before saying her goodbyes. You were truly thankful to have met Chikuchi on your first day at UA. You quickly sent her a text so that she could have your number, then started heading home. "At least I made ONE good friend here."

God, I love writing Chikuchi...
