As you stood outside the doors to the exam (which were GIGANTIC, by the way – seriously, where do they get the funding for that?!), you went over your plan of action in your mind once more. "Alright, so my quirk doesn't give me any fighting ability, and it won't work on the robots... But Aizawa said that you get points for rescuing others, so I'll just stick to that. Got it."

Luckily for you, your father was close friends with the erasure hero, and – by some grace of God – had convinced him to give you a tip that would hopefully help you pass the exam. "I wonder if anyone else knows about the rescue points..."

As you were lost in thought, you were interrupted by Present Mic's voice blaring over the loudspeakers. "LET'S START!! GET MOVING!!!"

You looked ahead at that moment to see that same head of messy purple hair from earlier disappear into the crowd of racing students. "Damn... Lost 'em again. I'll have to find them later." As everyone races forward through the open doors, you stick to the back of the crowd...

A. To avoid getting run over, and
B. To let the others get a chance at being in danger so that you can save them.

It's dark when you think about having to let others get hurt just so you can save them afterwards, but that was the only way you were going to get any points in this exam.

As you ran through the fake city, you saw the destruction left behind by the giant robots. Each time one came in your direction, you quickly ducked behind a building or into an alleyway, which earned you weird looks from some of the other participants. "WHERE THE HELL DO THEY GET THE FUNDING FOR ALL OF THIS??" you thought as another robot rolled past you, leaving dust and debris in its wake.

Whenever you saw a student that was injured or passed out, you made a mad dash toward them and helped move them to safety. One kid even got his leg caught in some rubble, and after pulling him out, you used your quirk to make him feel like his leg was surrounded in ice in an attempt to keep the swelling down.

As the exam eventually came to a close, you went over the results in your mind. "Alright, I saved six students, and helped that one kid with his leg, which should give me... about 30-35 points? Yeah, that sounds right."

-------------------------------

A week has passed since the exam and you just got your results in the mail. "Dad!!! It's here!" you shout as you rush in through the front door and kick your shoes off. You were so excited, you'd been checking the mailbox every day waiting for the UA-branded envelope with your name on it.

"Let me know what it says!" he calls out before you run into your room and shut the door. You set the envelope on your desk, when a thought occurs to you.

"What if I didn't get in? I want to be a hero more than anything... But what if I didn't get enough points?"

You didn't know what the average score was for the exam, but your dad had convinced you to also apply for general studies just in case you didn't make it into the hero course. He was convinced that attending UA was the best thing for you, and he wasn't going to take any chances.

Slowly, you take a seat at the desk and open the envelope, revealing a small disk inside. You let the disk slide out and onto the desk top and watch as a holographic projection of the one and only All Might illuminates the room.

"HA, HA, HA! I AM HERE!!"

-------------------------------

Here you are, sitting at your desk, staring at the small disk that has just finished playing the recording telling you that you didn't make it into the hero course. Words can't even begin to describe how disappointed you are. You had trained for weeks – no, months – building up your strength so that you could save people with ease, but it just wasn't enough. You didn't have the speed to save more people in the short amount of time that you were given... You didn't have any special way of finding more victims to rescue... And you certainly weren't blessed with a quirk that would help you defeat those giant robots.

Slowly, you sulked out of your bedroom and made your way to the living room. Your dad looked up from his spot on the couch when he heard you approaching and looked at you with a smile on his face. "So? How'd you do?" That smile disappeared as soon as he saw your expression.

"Five points, Dad... I was FIVE points away from getting into the hero course." Your voice caught in your throat as you tried not to cry. You then proceeded to fill him in on what All Might had said in the recording. Despite not getting the score that you wanted, your father, the most supportive person in your life, helped you see the silver lining.

"Well, at least you'll still make some new friends at UA, right? Plus, there's always a chance for you to transfer into the hero course later on in the year! And didn't you mention that All Might said you got second place out of all of the students who made it into the general studies course? That's amazing!!"

You loved your dad. Honestly, you didn't know where you'd be without him. His positivity was the one thing that kept you going when times got dark, and you couldn't be more grateful. The only way you could ever think to repay him was to keep your head high and march forward in life. However, with him being quirkless, there were some things that you couldn't talk to him about...

He knew about the extent of your quirk and why people have been afraid of it in the past, but he could never understand what it was like to actually be feared because of an ability that you possessed... Or what it was like to be called a "monster" and a "villain." You felt as though there might be no one else in the entire world who would understand what you've gone through.

After the pep talk with your dad, you head back to your room and flop on your bed. Taking out your phone, you consider texting one of your few friends in America. You take a look at the time. 4:15 pm. "There's a thirteen-hour time difference... They're probably still asleep by now."

When you lived in America, you made sure that none of your friends knew about your quirk. You made this decision after the disaster that happened when you were ten, and there weren't as many people with quirks in America, anyway, so it wasn't seen as an abnormality to not have one. Luckily for you, the schools that you attended there didn't have very many bullies, so there weren't any incidents that would trigger you to use your quirk.

You put your phone down on your nightstand and roll over to bury your face in your pillow so that it can soak up the last of your tears. "Dad's right. It's not the end of the world... And I still have a chance at being a pro! I'll prove everyone wrong and become the greatest hero they've ever seen!"

Sorry to end this on a sort of sad note... But it gets better, I promise!
