Chapter 39: Your Love Keeps Me On High

Megan Dalton

I finally turned twenty today without even knowing it. I feel old. Why didn't I look at my phone? Why hadn't I known?

My best friends really planned it all out. I love them. But on the contrary, I never expected them to do this to me.

Matt, my ever-loving and charismatic Matt, is holding me real close, never letting me go. I recognize this place. It's The Hotel. The same hotel where the scheming happened. Everybody's dancing to the beat of Boom Clap by Charli XCX and it's been fun.

I lead Matt to a seat so we both could rest. Damn, these 4-inch heels are killing me.

"You remember what happened back there?" He points at the balcony. I squint my eyes at him, "Ha, ha, very funny."

"I wasn't trying to!" He laughed.

"But yeah, I do. How could I forget the moment when someone played me like I'm a chess piece?"

"I can't tell if you're joking or not right now," He shrugs and I lay my head on his chest.

"I'm kidding," I said. "I love you." He leans in for a kiss, "I love you too."

A throwback song came along and it was Enchanted by Taylor Swift. Wow, just wow.

"I think I owe you a dance," Matt speaks up.

"Huh?" I ask. "I don't remember."

"You weren't here for prom. I didn't go, though. Why dance with somebody I don't like?"

"Fair enough. But really, it's okay." I smile at him. He shakes his head, "Megan, I may be a egomaniacal narcissist, but I know when I owe somebody."

I look at him in disbelief and I fanned myself in the process, "Oh my God, you admitted you're a narcissist! It's the first time in my twenty years of existence!"

"Get over yourself, Meg."

"Whatever, come on. I sure can move it. I'm from the dance club, right?"

He grins, "That's my girl."

We slow danced to the beat of Taylor Swift as her voice serenades us.

"I want to ask you something," Matt whispered.

"What?"

"Have you done it?"

"Done what?"

"The thing?"

"What thin--oooh. What the fuck, Matt?" I was really not expecting that.

"So did you do it with Tristan? Is he good in bed?"

"What kind of question is that?" I raised my eyebrows.

"Come on, at least give me some details!"

"I didn't do it. I'm still a virgin. Are you?" I wink at him.

"Okay so, your dad's coming this way so I better step down." What the hell? He didn't answer me! The devil!

And just like that, he limped going to his seat while my dad took his place, "Hi dad," I smile at him.

"Princess, you're all grown up now," I giggled at dad's statement. His hair isn't brown anymore. It has specks of grey in it. My dad's getting older.

"So are you," I say. "I love you dad."

My dad embraced me as we slow-danced. Another song came blasting the stereos and it was Say Something by A Great Big World.

"I'm so sorry for leaving you before, Meg," He called me Meg. Wow, that's a first. "I promise, I regretted that very moment. I can't believe I was so stupid."
