After the clock hits 8, I start to say goodbye to Jess and Nat.
"See you tomorrow." Natalie says, and I put on a fake smile. We went over the details for the Masquerade party, and I am full on dreading it. I close the door to Jessica's room and make my way down the hall. I knock on the door, open it, and see Mason standing beside his bed in a black T-shirt and black sweatpants. I never realized how dark his clothes colors are until now. As I continue to stare at him I notice black tattoos that trail along his arms. How could I have not seen these before?
Well after all, we did have sex in a garage while we were both drunk and fully clothed.
The amount of tattoos I see are countless, and they fit him perfectly. Here Mason was wearing the most casual clothes and looking better than I ever could. I hate how such a body could be on the most egotistical asshole I know.
"What are you doing in here?" He snapped at me, and our eyes lock. The intense shade of green burns deeper into mine and I look away quickly and step forward.
"I know you weren't the one who wrote the card yesterday, I'm sorry for assuming you were." I say. He stares at me blankly not sure what to say.
"Okay...Why the fuck should I care what you think?" He doesn't seem to care for my apology at all.
"And I'm sorry for hitting you, and mentioning your mother, I-"
"Don't you dare talk about her." He snaps as he steps closer to me, his voice low and full of venom.
"You're right, I'm sorry." I say, a little taken back in his sudden mood change. "Look, I know we've had a bit of a rough start since you've gotten back, and I would like for us to start over. Maybe be friends?"
I know what I'm asking for is stupid but I can't have a bad relationship with Mason when I'm constantly at his house. I'm not trying to argue with him all summer.
He looks at me up and down, as if he's thinking on what to say.
"And what makes you think I want to be friends?" He asks. Of course he would make this difficult.
"I know it would mean a lot to Jess." I say, expressing how little this friendship would mean to me.
He continues to stare at me for a few moments before I hear a flush coming in the other room beside his. The sound is followed by what seems to be water coming from a sink, and a few seconds later Sofia opens the door from Mason's bathroom, and walks into the room. She's wearing nothing but her bra and underwear, and I pretend to not feel her eyes on me.
I know Sofia heard everything I said, and I can't help but feel a bit embarrassed by it.
"Fine," Mason finally answers, taking a few steps back. "Is that all?"
"Uh, yeah." I answer.
"Great, don't forget to close the door behind you." He says, and turns around and sits on the bed. I can see how little my apology meant to him, it's obvious that our definition of the word 'friends' are two very different things.
"Are you deaf?" Sofia snaps. "He said close the fucking door."
I look at her, and back at him again before I walk out of the room and grab the doorknob to close the door. Once the door is closed, I can hear Sofia and Masons laugh from the other side of it.
This is going to be a long summer.
