CHAPTER 40

"Mom, dad. I thought you're on—"

Dad cut me off with his hard slap. His eyes were blank but every breath he's taking was hard and audible.

"Hindi kami tumuloy nang nabasa ko ang nasa newspaper," malamig na pahayag ni mommy. I couldn't meet their contemptuous eyes. I felt like I was judged already without hearing my argument. "Now I know kung bakit ganoon ang pakikitungo niyo sa isa't-isa. Akala ko ay nag-iiwasan lang kayo dahil pareho kayong may nakaraan sa iisang lalaki," mom said disappointingly. "How—!" She held her heart.

"Mommy!"

"Don't you dare come to me! You're such a disappointment!" I stepped backward. It was always my fault. She's about to say another blow but Nana Sonia came.

"Hera, si Hari..."

"Bakit? Anong nangyari?" nag-aalalang tanong ni dad. Doon lang siya kumibo.

"Naaksidente siya."

I gasped in hearing the bad news. Tinapunan ako ng masamang tingin ni mommy bago sila umalis. The news hadn't sunk into me yet. But when I realized what happened, I went to them.

"Mom..."

My mother's round-trip slap made me fall on the floor. Galit na galit siyang humarap sakin.

"You have the nerve to come here after what happened? Do you wanna make sure that she's dead?" I was hurt by her groundless accusation. I was here, of course, because I was worried. Not the other way around. Hindi ko naman ginusto ang nangyari. "Sabihin mo nga sakin, Hali. How can you bear seeing your sister in pain because of your selfish actuation? Paano mo siya nakayanang harapin na hindi nakokonsensya sa ginawa mong kataksilan sa kaniya sa araw-araw na ginawa ng Diyos? Ate ka! You're the eldest! You should've protected her!"

How unfair, wasn't it? Hari cheated too. It was painful knowing what she did to me, too. But because I was the eldest, I must sacrifice my happiness. I must protect her. I did. I tried. But it was an unbearable thing to do. My heart suffered a lot. Wasn't it enough to choose myself this time around?

Magsasalita pa sana si mommy when the doctor came out from the operating room.

"Who's the patient's parent?"

"How is she, Doc?" agad na tanong ni dad.

Bagsak ang balikat ng doktor na humarap sa amin. I wanna know yet I was scared at the same time.

"The patient is still under monitoring. Naagapan ang bleeding sa ulo niya but she suffered a heavy blow of head injury. She might be in comatose kapag hindi siya nagising within six hours. We have saved the patient but the baby was lost. I'm sorry. We did our best."

"Baby?"

"Yes, hija. The patient was almost ten weeks pregnant. But unfortunately, the baby didn't survive." Nanghina akong napaupo sa sahig. Oh, God!

"Are you happy now?" mom chided.

"Mommy...I didn't know."

"Of course! You don't! Now I know why she wants her pregnancy kept hidden!" she exclaimed with animosity. "Get out, Hali! Before I could do something bad and forget that you're my daughter, get out!" She pointed the exit door with her glare and angry voice.

Hindi ako nakakilos dahil sa nalaman. Si Nana Sonia ang umakay sakin palabas. Umiyak ako sa kotse. I couldn't forget this nightmare. How would everybody accept this news? Nasapo ko ang noo ko. Dapat ba ay hindi ko nalang sinabi?

"Ma'am, may naghihintay po sa inyo sa lobby."

Nag-angat ako ng tingin sa sinabi ng secretary ko. "Sino raw?"
