27. One step at a time

Last night was a mistake, Jungkook realizes that much the moment he wakes up and doesn't find Taehyung next to him. An uneasy feeling settles into his stomach as he calls his name out once, twice but doesn't get any response.

Did Taehyung really leave him?

In his panicked state he rushes around the apartment to find Taehyung. Almost on the verge of crying when he doesn't see Taehyung, nor Yeontan.

He's about to call Taehyung when the front door opens and Taehyung walks in along with Yeontan in his hands. Relief washes over Jungkook when he sees the elder but his panic state and hysteric expression is not hidden from Taehyung. He immediately picks up on Jungkook's odd body language.

"What happened Gukkie?" He asks, putting Yeontan down and reaching forward to lift Jungkook's face by hooking his fingers under his chin.

Jungkook tries to look away but Taehyung holds him, eyebrows furrowing and concerned. "I- I nothing!" He stutters over his words.

Taehyung doesn't look convinced. He drops the paper bag he is holding in his other hand on the nearby table and laces his fingers around Jungkook's, giving it a squeeze.

"We talked about this Jungkook. Tell me what it is, you promised you'd tell me everything." Taehyung sighs when Jungkook looks into his eyes, giving him an encouraging nod.

"It's dumb, but I thought you, um.... left."

Something akin to shock phases to Taehyung's face as he holds Jungkook's hand tight, "Oh, Jungkook. I told you, I'll stay right?"

Jungkook nods, feeling guilty that he doubted Taehyung like that, "I know, I just-- I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sorry," he says, looking away from Taehyung. He just wants to ground to swallow him right now. Stupid Jungkook.

"I bought us breakfast, we'll sit down and tell me what you were thinking okay? Let's go." Taehyung brushes his fingers into Jungkook's hair and pecks him on the lips when Jungkook nods and smiles back.

Taehyung actually went outside to bring them breakfast. Jungkook's heart swells with adoration as he looks at Taehyung fussing over the table to spread out the food. He quickly goes and brushes his teeth and joins the elder on the kitchen counter.

"You bought me breakfast, how cute." Jungkook can't help but feel a bit dumb for acting so abruptly before. It's not like he doesn't trust Taehyung. He does, but the knack of worry that eats up half of Jungkook's brain is ever present. And Jungkook has always been someone who over thinks a lot.

"I bought your favorite!" Taehyung says, smiling wide at Jungkook. The table is full with food, varying from pancakes, fruit bowls, banana milk and toast. Taehyung sure as hell overdid himself.

Yeontan sits on the floor between their legs, whining for some attention. Jungkook bends down to ruffle his fur. They eat breakfast and Taehyung tells him about how he went for a walk because Yeontan is not fully trained and then decides to get breakfast for both of them.

Jungkook tries to stall for a while but then the rational part of him yells to talk so he let's that power him. "I don't have a way to explain this properly but I was worried that maybe last night we took things way too fast even though we decided to take one step at a time-" he takes a deep breath and tries to gauge Taehyung's expression, continuing when Taehyung nods. "-- and that maybe I made a mistake and somehow fucked up again so you left."
