ZOE'S POV
So it's really happening. I'm skipping school without even alerting my best friend. I'm getting out of my lane. At the same time I do want to spend time with Mike, get to know him better. I'm wearing my school uniform, the skirt. I was supposed to meet Mike at the shopping center but he didn't agree to that instead he said he will come fetch me a few blocks from my house where we separated the other day. I text him to let him know that I'm ready he can come.
I walk out of the house, walking slowly to the location we're meeting at. It's a Friday morning few people are walking, cars passing by to work. I'm looking around, no sign of him. Where is he? A car stops by my side playing RnB music at a low volume. It's a blue BMW motorsport with dim windows. The window then opens, sliding down.
"Are you going to continue staring at the car or you're getting in?" Mike asks and I just stand there, as I continue staring at the car. "Come on Zoe it's just a question I'm not being rude." "I'm sorry I'm just surprised." "Surprised of what, to see me?" I continue looking at the car. "Since I'm talking alone, let me come and open the door for you." Mike comes out of the driver's seat to open the passenger door for me.
I swear I heard everything he was saying I was just having second thoughts of doing this. I have school to attend. If anyone sees me getting inside a car, how will they view me? I observe around to check whether there's anyone who knows me, luckily there isn't. "Thank you" "You don't have to." We smile at each other. He quickly gets inside the car and we drive off.
"Nice car" "It's my dad's car." He replies and switch on the volume while focusing on the road. He's playing Usher's song - YOU REMIND ME(OF A GIRL). I really don't know how to begin a conversation that will fit us both. "So you like Usher?" I question him. He tilts his head around to look at me while smiling. "Not really, I do listen to some of his songs though. This one is my favorite." He smiles at me again then focus on the road while playing with his fingers around the steering wheel.
"I like Usher and all his songs." I tell Mike. "Which one is your favorite?" "CRASH" "Why that one?" He asks quietly. "I feel like he was so emotional when writing the song, whenever I listen to it I found myself crying." "Do you relate to the song or maybe you once loved someone you can't get over him?" Concern is filling his voice as he asks. "No-" I laugh. "You know growing up my dad always told me that I'm a princess, I deserve a prince who'll treat me right always because I'm smart and beautiful-" "I agree with your dad on that one." He interrupts me.
"Sorry please carry on." "Thank you, so when I listen to those words- would you mind if I still love you? Would you mind if things don't last? Would you mind if I hold onto you so that I won't crash. I put myself in his shoes trying to know how it felt like to love someone and that person doesn't love you back no more." I get emotional and my tears drop. Mike parks the car by the roadway. "Don't cry Zoe-" he wipes my few tears gently using his hand.
"Stop overthinking things too, you'll find your real soulmate who'll love you whole heartedly with no doubt and please stop listening to that song because it's giving you wrong ideas." "There's more to the song too." My voice is cracking, letting me down. "I'm all ears dear." "It's my dad" I pause. "Him and mom had the best love anyone could ever wish for. He left my mom just like that, they had the best marriage and I feel like my mom still loves him while he doesn't care about her anymore." I sob quietly. I feel Mike's warm hands around my shoulders, bringing me close to his chest.
"Don't carry your parent's burden, only they know why they divorced." He brushes my back and lifts up my chin to look at me. "Everything we'll be okay. I'm here for you. Now let's get going we're almost home." He starts on the car and we're back on the road. "You really know how to make one feel better." I say, he offers me a smile. "I'm sorry I ended up being emotional, tell me who the song reminds you of." I had to ask, I'm curious to know. "That's a story for another day, for now let us focus on us." He pleas, I nod.
