ZOE'S POV

"Are you sure you're ready for school today? If you ain't ready to face people you can skip it just for today." Linda queries and suggests at the same time with concern through the phone. "Stop worrying yourself, I'm fine." I answer to her in a monotone. A background voice from afar can be heard through her phone speaker. "Friend I've got to go, mom's calling me. See you at school." She announces in a hurry. "Bye" I say then hang up and continue staring at the image of myself on the mirror as I adjust my tie.

I admire of how decent I look in my school uniform with a blazer on, looking much of the A student that I am. Mom enters my room and instantly freezes in her tracks. "This can't be my baby! Wow you are so beautiful than ever." She compliments as she makes her way towards my standing position in front of the mirror. A smile clouds my features "Thank you. Look at yourself too!" "Argh stop it. Are you ready for your first day at school as a senior?" She asks as she's now standing in her heels next to I, placing her hands at the back of my shoulders. "Honestly speaking I don't know mom, it all feels like my first day at school like when I was five." I admit to her.

"You'll be fine. Come, breakfast's ready." She says and pats my shoulders before exiting the room. I take one last look at myself on the mirror then let out a deep breath before heading to the kitchen with my school bag in hand. As I appear by the kitchen, mom has placed all types of cereal we have in the house along with bowls, spoons and milk on the kitchen counter. She has already begun eating her muesli with strawberries, blue berries and plain yogurt while I on the other hand I simply go for all bran flakes. She's almost done with her food.

"I'm taking you to school today." She informs and I almost choke on my food. "No I'll take the bus." I decline to her but she urges "Not up for discussion, hurry up and lets go we're running late." She says as she checks on her watch then head towards the zinc to place her bowl. "You making it seem as if it's my first day at school." I backfire. "In senior grade, yes it is." She states then grab her handbag and car keys ready to head out. I quickly shove in more spoons into my mouth as it seems like I won't finish my breakfast since I was eating slow. Mom is already making her way towards the door; I grab my school bag as I run to catch on her.

"Don't forget to lock the door." She yells from the car, reminding me. I turn back fast and remove the keys from the inside to lock the door then run towards the car, she laughs at me once I get in the passenger seat. "Why are you this grumpy in the morning?" She questions as she puts the engine to life. I can't even reply to her scoffed question. I simply look at her and let out a deep breath then put on the seat belt as we get on the road. Our ride to school is silent as I gaze out the window, something I usually do when I'm in the car.

"You okay?" Mom asks as she diverge her attention from the road to I, bringing me back to reality and out of my thoughts. "Yeah" I nod, trying to shield my emotions. My school appears in sight after mom's question and I begin to feel nervous again. Mom pulls off by the main gate. Keep calm, you'll be fine! "Thank you for the ride. You don't have to fetch me after school I'll take the bus." I acknowledge and inform her. "If you say so, my job's done here." She says in a dismissive tone and I open the door ready to step out. "You are forgetting something young lady." She speaks and I roll my eyes before offering her a kiss on her cheek in a hurry then head out.

"Bye" she says and I wave to her as she departs. I didn't want to keep her long around my school premises, it's not safe as she could spot pupils' weird behavior or before one can open their mouth to comment on me in front of my mom. I just couldn't take the risk of any of that knowing how pupils can be insane at times. I watch as she disappears with her car, heading to work. I try to move my feet towards the school, feeling as if all eyes are on me. The bell rings for assembly and here I am walking slowly as I hold tightly on my school bag belts, as a grade one learner who has just been dropped off by their parents.
