ZOE'S POV
Today is Christmas Eve and my mom just arrived with plastic bags of groceries. "So much groceries Lizzy, we would have went shopping if we needed anything." Aunt Julia states as she's glancing at the food my mom bought. "I bought these for tomorrow's meal. I have a new recipe to make since I'm the only one who likes cooking here." Mom implies playfully to aunt and she simply smiles at her.
"Don't get started with me." Aunt threatens, offering mom an intimidating look. "You know that face doesn't suit you right." Mom says and Aunt Julia's facial expression morphs into amusement. "And the good news is that we're going to make this new recipe together." Mom adds. "Great" Aunt Julia's voice is filled with sarcasm as she hit her forehead. "Now I see why my brother loved you this much." Aunt remarks and mom's face settles for neutrality.
"Can we talk in the room and give the kids space." Mom suggests and aunt nods. "Can you guys please finish up packing these groceries." Aunt requests, facing the three of us as we're seated on the couch. "Sure thing mom" Camilla replies blankly. Well my cousins' faces are buried in their phones as they use the Wi-Fi to surface the net while I'm watching Black-ish series which they find it boring. Though my face was facing the television this whole time, my focus wasn't fully there; it was on mom and aunt's conversation over the kitchen as I tried by all means to unnoticeable bring my ear over their conversation.
"Your kids have grown hey." Mom says to aunt as she glances over Camilla and Glen who simply offer smiles. "And we're getting old." Aunt retorts as they both laugh, disappearing from sight. I smile at myself, I can say I haven't seen my mom this happy in a while ever since dad left her but today she's happy and even glowing with her confidence back. She might have acted tough but I know deep down she was breaking down due to their separation with dad.
"You okay?" Glen questions, drifting his attention to me "Uhm yeah I am." I mutter and he looks at me suspiciously as he stands up heading to the kitchen with Camilla lazily dragging her feet behind. "Lazy bitch" I tease her as I grab her hand, pulling her whole body to the kitchen and she groans. Glen doesn't entertain us; he has already begun packing the groceries in the cabinet. I pack a few groceries and announce "Guys I'll be back I need to use the bathroom." "Okay" "Cool" they say in unison as their focus is on the packing.
I depart the kitchen heading to the bathroom and my attention's instantly caught by my mom and aunt's whispering voices from the room as the door is slightly open. My subconscious tells me to stop in my tracks and eavesdrop on their conversation. Shame on you! I tell her though I still decide to take her ridiculous orders. I stop in my tracks and hear aunt's voice speaks.
"Luke does love you and you know that too."
"If your brother really loved me he wouldn't have put me through all this pain." Mom comes to her defence.
"Just give him time please to comes back to his senses."
"All this is unfair. He moved with his life while mine is at pause. He should just sign the damn papers so I'll also be able to move on freely." Mom's voice is filled with anger now.
"I'm sorry Lizzy. I'll talk to him." Aunt says as she grabs mom's hand for comfort.
"Don't bother Julia I'll sort it out myself." Mom states and I see aunt bringing mom closer to her chest as they embrace in a hug.
So my parents haven't divorced and all along I thought they were! I have to admit the fact that I'm happy to hear that, hopefully one day they will get back together. I'm still mad at my dad for putting mom through so much pain but I do want us to be a normal family again. I tiptoe quietly heading to the bathroom. I quickly release my urine in a hurry remembering that I left my cousins packing at the kitchen.
