That night, Marinette isn't able to close her eyes. Even when she's out of town, she can't seem to find the rest she deserves. Marinette makes her way outside without waking anyone and lays down at the edge of the woods, staring up to the sky and looking at the bright moon and stars.

"I'm so tired, Tikki. I don't know what to do."

"It's gonna be okay, I'm certain you'll figure things out, you always do."

"I don't know if I can this time. It's getting harder to keep my double life a secret with each day that passes. And with Chat being injured, I don't think I can face these dangers on my own." Tikki doesn't know how to respond, she's never seen any owner being this exhausted, she's never had an owner who's also the guardian.

"If you think you need help, you can loan someone a miraculous until Chat feels better." Tikki offers, but Marinette refuses.

"I can't risk it, HawkMoth already has two miraculouses and he knows the identities of most holders. It's too dangerous to loan anyone a miraculous until he's defeated."

That same night, Adrien isn't able to find some sleep either. He can't stop thinking about Marinette, she can be insecure, but she's so brave when it's needed. And today, he almost kissed her, he even got a little bit mad when it got disrupted by Ms Mendeleiev. He doesn't get it, why did he get mad? It isn't like he's in love with Marinette, she's just a friend, right?

"Plagg, wake up buddy." Adrien whispers.

"Is it time for my morning cheese yet?" Plagg yawns.

"Not yet, I just need to clear my mind a bit. Come with me." Adrien walks outside, he was planning on transforming, but doesn't when he sees a blue haired girl laying down on the grass a few feet apart from him.

"What is Marinette doing awake?" He asks himself, not sure if he should walk up to her or go back inside and leave her alone.

He decides going back inside is the best choice, but Plagg has other plans "Just go talk to her, I'm certain she'd like some company."

"As Chat or as Adrien?" Plagg could just die on the spot, Marinette doesn't need a black cat, she needs Adrien.

"Go talk to her as Adrien, don't put on a mask."

"Hey Marinette, do you mind if I join you?" Adrien asks.

Tikki manages to hide just in time. "No, not at all." Marinette stutters, turning red. But since it's dark, Adrien doesn't notice.

"Can't sleep either?"

"No, I keep thinking about today. And not the truth or dare, I totally forgot about the almost kiss already but obviously I didn't totally forget it otherwise I couldn't tell you this because I forgot but-" Marinette starts rambling, but manages to stop herself when Adrien chuckles a bit. "What I meant was that I kept thinking about the akuma attack. I know you weren't there, you disappeared early, but I felt defenceless. I felt like I needed to do something, I needed to help, but I froze. And if it wasn't for Chat Noir, I wouldn't even be here." Adrien needs to tell her it's okay, that he wouldn't be here either if it wasn't for her, but he can't without raising suspicion over his secret identity.

"I heard you saved Chat Noir too, you're very brave Marinette."

"I didn't save him." Marinette says. She can't go in on the details without revealing her identity, but if she didn't say those awful things to Alya which got her akumatised, Lady WiFi wouldn't have injured Chat and then he didn't even need saving today. It's all her fault.

"Do you know what my mother once said to me?" Adrien asks, he doesn't know why he wants to tell Marinette, he feels like it's the right thing to do. "She said that people have to stop blaming themselves for something they cannot control. Some people spent years mumbling 'sorry' beneath wet cheeks and mournful eyes, allowing everyone else to lay their pain on them. Some people force a smile while, like a sponge, they absorb their sufferings, carrying it deep within them, like a secret you can't discard. Those people lay down their lives for everyone else, but don't realise they need someone else to be the sponge for them."

"Sounds like your mother was a wise woman."

"She was."

"I'm sorry for your loss." Adrien smiles, no one has ever said that to him, everyone acted like it didn't matter, that dying is a part of life. It is, of course, but those few comforting words can be a real help.

"Thanks Marinette." He says, watching into her bluebell eyes, he can see the moon and stars reflecting through them, which makes it look like they light up. They somehow remind him of his lady, they sometimes flicker like this too. Maybe he was wrong all this time, maybe he really is falling for his friend.

"I should get some sleep, tomorrow is gonna be a busy day." Adrien says.

"Sleep tight, I'm going to stay here a little longer." Marinette says, waving goodbye to Adrien.

She knows he'll never fall in love with her, but she can't stop thinking about his perfect blond hair and green eyes. Why can't she be more confident and tell him how she feels.
And if she loves Adrien so much, why does her heart make a jump every time she sees Chat?
