Cassy

"Mom?" I softly called out to my mother from up the stairs. I slowly went down, clutching the teddy bear in my arms. I saw her sitting on the dining table, working as usual. She looked up from her manuscript, removing her glasses.

"Yes, honey? Come here," she stretched both of her arms out to me. I cautiously tiptoed to her as she took me on to her lap.

"I want to ask you something." I stared at her tired eyes in wonder.

"And what is it that my curious little baby wants to know this time?" she tapped my nose. I made myself cozy in her arms and looked up to her.

"Why is daddy not home?" I blurted out. The warm smile on her face fell to a blank one.

"Uhm, listen honey.." she shifted on her spot,

"You're growing up and sooner or later you'll find out." She paused, "Daddy and I aren't on good terms and he isn't feeling well and I am too." She plotted,

The six-year old me gasped, "Mommy, you're sick?!" I put my palm on her forehead, "You should take some medicine, mmy." Barely making out the words,

Mom chuckled, "Sure, honey. I will."

The silence filled the air until I broke it, my eyes sparkling in wonder.

"Mom?"

"Hmm?" she hummed as she planted a kiss on the top of my head.

"What's daddy's name?" I asked suddenly.

She paused for a while but chuckled, "Why does my baby have so many questions today? You want to look for him?"

"Just because..."

" I want to give him medicine too." I moved my small shoulders, looking back up at her. She chuckled and stared at me with wonder in her eyes.

"Carl Gray, honey. His name is Carl Gray."

After the night Cassy met a strange man outside her house, she still hasn't been texting me since. I got short replies but other than that, we didn't meet. It's been almost three days since the last text and two days since I last visited her.

She was probably busy with her new book. I was having a fair share of pressure too. The company has been pressuring me on the big project they gave me. They wanted to pay me ten thousand dollars in exchange of something. Also, I wasn't able to sleep a wink last night.

I decided to check on Cassy at her home in case things were getting hectic for her. Honestly, I've grown fond of her. But then again, that one thought kept creeping at the back of my mind.

"Clarke! Office, now." Brian hollered from across the room, breaking my trance, and I knew that it was about the contract he was getting me on again. I followed to his office and watched as he sat down. That smug look on his face growing more prominent as I thought of the reason why I was being called here.

"Have you gotten her to sign, yet?" he proceeded to asking after I closed the glass door behind me.

I shook my head, "I haven't, sir."

"Don't tell me you're still not decided? Come on, Clarke. You got nothing to lose. Just get her into the contract and you got yourself a treat." He insisted, plopping both of his elbows on his table. I was about to answer him but his telephone interrupted.
