Cassy

The whole duration of lunch was a deafening silence after the dialogue Ellis and I shared. We silently finished everything. He disappeared after eating without a word but I didn't bother looking for him.

It was already three in the afternoon and Nana left almost an hour ago. She needed to go home because it was her first granddaughter's birthday. I offered her a ride but her husband, Richard came with their daughter to pick her up which leaves me to myself.

I stood up from the balcony and went to my bedroom to read a book. I plop down on to my bed and opened the first page. This book was gifted to me by Mark months ago, yep as if I haven't had a handful of books at this point of my life—not that I'm complaining! He's the sweetest. He told me I should read this when I felt the need to. Also, that this is a really good book since he read it before giving it to me.

Speaking of Mark, I should send him and Sarah a message, just to let them know that I'm still alive.

I started reading the story and began to internalize the plot. The story started off quite mellow—the usual. A boring day in a girl's life then she gets involved in a romantic plot with her long-time friend. One thing though, I noticed that the author used comedic phrase but he was able to transition it well to the serious parts. I find it hard when I write scenes like that.

Anyhow, the story progressed and it showed how much the guy was willing to prove his feelings to her but the girl rejected repeatedly because it didn't feel right to her. I got so immersed in the story when I happened to glance at the page, 93. I lifted my eyes to the clock and realized that it was already five-thirty. I flipped another page and decided to stop reading, until my eye caught a highlighted sentence.

"I have these feelings for you and they're enough to drive me crazy."

I flipped through the pages with interest growing inside of me, knitting my eyebrows together.

"I really wanted to tell you, the first time my gaze fell upon you, I was enchanted and I wanted to know you more. That's why I decided to be your friend."

I flipped again,

"I wish I could do something about these feelings, Rianne."

My heart was beating fast and I move my fingers to flip another page but my thumb slipped, enough to scratch me a papercut. I hissed and pressed my finger to let the blood drip. I cautiously closed the book and reached for a toilet paper.

I couldn't help but think about the lines though. Why were there highlighted words? Most importantly, who highlighted them? My thoughts refuse to register that it could be Mark who did it. If it was him, why would he? He knows I hated staining my books.

Was he in love or something? With whom? I don't recall him having a female friend except Sarah—but Sarah is kind of seeing someone from what I know. Leah? She has a boyfriend. And me. Me??

I stared at the wall and sunk further into my bed. I reach out for my phone and switched it open. I was instantly met with messages and I scrolled pass through them to open Sarah's contact.

To Sarah : Hey, how's it going with Mike? I'm still alive by the way, just letting you know, hehe.

I almost got a response instantly.

Sarah : Uh, good? Why ask? We're going out this Sunday with his little sister. And yeah, I know. How's it going over there?

To Sarah : Good, but you have some explaining to do once I get back.
