MELANIE RICHARDS
After school ends, I get home with Jamie to his place. He said Elle is already there. Elle has his key since he moved to Columbus.
By the time Jamie parks the car, the front door opens with a short blond girl waving and jumping at us. Elle. I get out of the car and runs to her to give her a hug. She hugs me tight with a chuckle between it. We talk a bit as I look at Jamie who is coming our way and I let them have their moment together.
They are babbling around their sweet quotations. Which is pretty annoying to hear. But they are probably the most reliable relationship I've ever seen. Other than the couples that are just dating for only a matter of popularity and the front page newspaper.
They reach me by sitting on the stuffed couch in front of the tv and start to talk nonsense, about Elle's education and life back in Strongsville and also me and Jamie's life in here. Elle is such a moodlifter, if she lives here, she would be my only girl friend, and she's pretty too. She has dimples and short blond curls when her hair is naturally brunette. Like, really pretty. I sometimes get so insecure around her.
My phone rings when Jamie and Elle leave me to another room and God knows what are they doing right now. I look at the screen and Miles' name pops out. I sigh and slide the screen to answer it.
"Yeah," I answer.
"Come out." He says.
I walk up to the door to see Miles dresses up with his usual tank and his knee-length navy pants.
"Hi." I walk up to him and he opens the door for me. "Thanks." I smile at him.
As he reaches his door and starts the engine, he turns up the radio and a rap song comes on pretty loud. "You look beautiful." He says, driving his car.
"Uhm, I haven't changed since I got back from school." I chuckle.
"Yeah, I mean you look beautiful everyday. Just to remind you."
I give him a thanks smile. "Where are we heading to?" I ask him, looking at the rearview window.
"Do you want something to eat? Treats on me." He grins looking straight to me.
"Yeah, sure." I shrug.
Miles finally drives me to Denny's. Old memories flash through my mind.
"Denny's, huh?"
"We used to go here with Nathan and Gale. Remember?" He chuckles and gets out of car. I throw a crooked smile and I unbuckle my seatbelt. Before I get to open the door, Miles is already there opening the car door.
"Uh, thankyou." I chuckle and get out of the car.
"Yep." He smiles.
"What can I get for you two?" The employee asks us behind the computer.
"Hey, uhm, I need to go to the toilet. I'll have the same like you." I smile.
"Okay," He smiles. "I'll have a—"
I walk through the two faced toilet door and wash my hands for no reason. I look at my self in the mirror. It's distracting me to the edge when Miles mentioned Nathan few minutes ago. My memories I had with Nathan was amazing. We went to Denny's almost everyday and it smacks my heart a bit when he mentioned him. Especially, Gale. That demon spawn.
I exit the empty room and search for Miles and there I see him at the corner green couch. I walk over to him and before I sit, he smiles.
"Sorry for taking too long," I sit down to see a waffle and vanilla ice cream on top of it. The same with Miles. I don't have the appetite to eat. But I have to. It's rude not to eat.
He starts to pull out a small talk. We chat for a long while and it's kind of fun. Miles isn't like the old days and I'm enjoying his company. He's open, sweet, and also, funny. Never has changed, I thought. I act really cool around him, just the way I act to other people. There are no awkward tense in me or the feeling of being nervous all the time, like when I'm with Niall.
"Well, who are you with now?" He clears his throat and I can still see his earlier smile fading away.
"No one. Probably for the next 3 years. I don't know, I don't really feel like dating." I shrug.
"Oh," He hisses. "Well, that's an unfortunate."
"Why's that?" I squint my eyes.
"There are so many guys out there, probably waiting and fighting for you. But you seem to blow them away even before they have the chance to shoot. It's an unfortunate—for the guys." He remarks. "Why?" He asks, folding his arms in a curious way.
"Why what?"
"Why are you being like this? Why don't you want to live your life? Why don't you date someone?"
"So many questions." I shake my head and gulp the coke through my throat.
As the diner's about to close, we leave quickly and he pulls the car onto the drive way.
"I had fun talking to you, really." I chuckle.
"We were just talking. We didn't really do anything, did we?" He shakes his head and I escape a laugh. "Uh, my friend invited me to a fraternity party. It's not that far from here, do you want me to take you home? Or. . ."
Sounds like a bad idea.
