The only reason I agreed to this stupid birthday party, was to get Lexie to leave me alone about it. Kurt had kicked me out of my own house for the day, so they could set it up. Scarlett and Santana were put in charge of watching me all day, to make sure I didn't go back to the house. Finn and Lexie were God knows where doing God knows what. I didn't even want to know what they were doing. I had enough of that the last time Lexie stayed over.
I don't even know why people trusted Scarlett and Santana to watch me. I mean, they were practically all over each other in the car. I mean, don't get me wrong. I didn't mind them being themselves. Personally, I wasn't into that, but whatever floats your boat. "So...when can I go back to my house?"
"I haven't gotten the okay from Kurt yet. I can't let you go back until I get the okay from Kurt" I sighed. "You're never going to get the okay from Kurt, just take me back home." Scarlett just ignored me at this point. I thought for a moment about what Finn would have gotten me. There was nothing specific I wanted. There was absolutely nothing that I wanted that was so important that he would be gone all day to go and get it.
"So, Scarlett, do you know what Finn is getting me? Because I might need to clean out my room to make room for it." Scarlett and Santana both looked at each other. "I don't think Finn's gonna let you keep it in your room." Scarlett said to me. I leaned ahead, sticking my head between Scarlett and Santana in the front rows. Scarlett's phone buzzed and the name that was on the phone, was very obviously Kurt.
"Kurt just texted you. Can we go home now?"
"Finn and Lexie aren't there with your present."
"I don't care if they aren't there with the present. I wanna go home. I wanna start my Sweet Sixteen."
Scarlett and Santana both looked at each other. "Finn did say that he wasn't going to be back until like eight-thirty. Even then, he has to put it in a box." Scarlett whispered. "Just take her home." Santana replied. Scarlett sighed and turned the car around. I thought for a moment. So, it had to be far away for them to not be back until eight-thirty and it doesn't come in a box. What the hell did he get me?
We drove back to my house and the entire time I thought about what it was that he could have gotten me. "Wait, wait, wait. Lexie told me that there was gonna be alcohol at this party. How is there gonna be alcohol if my mom and Burt are home?" Santana smirked. "I may have bought them Vegas tickets online to keep 'em distracted for the weekend."
I sighed. They kicked my parents out of town for the weekend to let me drink at my Sweet Sixteen.
Anyway, we pulled up to the house and nobody was good at hiding that they were there. I mean, their cars were in the driveway. I got out of the car and walked inside. They all jumped up and yelled surprise. I put on my best surprised face. Kurt walked up and smiled. "So, Finn won't be here for another hour with your present, so why don't we party a bit. Then, when he gets here, you can open your present."
I looked around the room for a few moments before noticing something. "So, I'm only getting one?" Everyone looked at each other. "I mean, I don't care, but I didn't think that was the point of having a birthday. Is it that expensive that you all had to chip in?" They all nodded, in an agreeing kind of way. "Right, that's not the point of having a party. Let's party, shall we?"
And it started. Everyone was drinking, having a good time. Of course, I wasn't allowed to have any fun. They told me I had to wait to drink because I couldn't be drunk when Finn came home. It felt like the hour was going by so slow. Of course, it wasn't because I was talking to Scarlett one minute and the next thing I knew, I was being pulled into the living room because Finn was home.
"This needs to go by quick."
He stared at me for a minute, before Lexie stood in front of him. "Alright, now this present took us a while to get to you due to...difficulties. But, we got it here. This present was all Finn's idea. I wanted to just get you maybe a nice necklace or ring or something, but when he said this, we all knew that it was a pretty good idea."
"Now, don't be mad at me." Finn said.
I looked at him before he moved out of the way to reveal the present. My entire body froze. I couldn't move. Then, I could. I just ran up and hugged him. The best present anyone could ever give me. Sam. Him and his family moved away when his dad got a better job offer and I hadn't seen him for a while. It was the worst thing...being away from someone you loved. The worst thing. Especially...when the last thing you said to them was something stupid and snarky.
I didn't want to move. I didn't move. I just stood there and hugged him. It felt like it was just us two in the world for the moment. I wanted so badly to say Sam, I'm in love with you but I couldn't do it with everyone standing there. I finally pulled away from the hug, stared at him for a moment and then turned to hug Finn.
"Thank you. I love my birthday gift."
"I knew you would."
I pulled away and turned to everyone.
"Now, let's get this party started."
